  • Search Strategies in Practice

    Matheus M Pacheco, Charley W Lafe et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2020

To execute a motor solution to a given task, individuals search through the space of movement possibilities guided by information that arises from the interaction with task and environment. Through this search, individuals seek to avoid inappropriate solutions through local minima in the task space. The processes that lead to some but not all individuals avoiding local minima and finding solutions is not yet understood. Based on the tenets of eco…

  • Perceptual Learning of Tooling Affordances of a Jointed Object via Dynamic Touch

Madhur Mangalam, Matheus M Pacheco et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2019

We investigated whether perceptual learning via dynamic touch can facilitate the discovery of tooling affordances. Twelve blindfolded participants manipulated two structurally identical aluminum objects consisting of a blade and a shaft; one object was seven and a half times heavier than and twice as large as the other object. Flexions/extensions at two joints in the shaft changed the configuration and functionality of each object. A rigid shaft …

  • Stone-Tool Use in Wild Monkeys

Madhur Mangalam, Dorothy M Fragaszy et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2017

Handheld tools transform the actor's body into a body-plus-tool system such that the fit of the actor's body, the tool, and the task demand channel movement in action. In this study, we performed a biomechanical analysis of percussive actions in wild bearded capuchin monkeys, Sapajus libidinosus at Fazenda Boa Vista, Brazil, as they cracked open tucum nuts with anvil-and-hammer tools from the frame of reference of the body-plus-tool system. The r…

  • Search Strategies in Practice

    Matheus M Pacheco, Tsung-Yu Hsieh et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2017

Practice has been conceptualized in terms of a search process through an evolving perceptual-motor workspace. The experiment was set up to examine whether the inherent variability of the system would influence perception of the relevant properties of the task space. We reanalyzed the data from Hsieh, Liu, Mayer-Kress, and Newell (2013) in which participants performed a speed-accuracy aiming task and feedback emphasized either temporal or spatial …

  • Age-Related Loss of Adaptability to Fast Time Scales in Motor Variability

    Jacob J Sosnoff, Karl M Newell•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2008•References: 1

We investigated the ability of older adults to intentionally adapt their sensorimotor output to differing time and frequency properties (1/f noise structure) of a target-force target waveform. We tested the hypothesis that elderly adults are less adaptable than their younger counterparts to the time- and frequency-dependent demands of continuous sensorimotor output and that this effect is mediated by the frequency content of the task demand. The …

  • The Generalization of Perceptual-Motor Intra-Individual Variability in Young and Old Adults

    Jacob J Sosnoff, Karl M Newell•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2006•References: 4

We examined the generalizability of intra-individual perceptual-motor variability in young and old adults. Participants completed four motor tasks that all required the maintenance of a steady state: finger tremor, and single-digit, two-digit, and three-digit isometric force production. Older adults had a greater amount of variability and an increased time and frequency structure of variability, except in the tremor task. There was a moderate ass…

  • Noise, variability, and the development of children’s perceptual-motor skills

    Open Access•Katherine M Deutsch, Karl M Newell•ARTICLE•Developmental Review•2005

  • Mouthing and Grasping of Objects by Young Infants

    Valerie A Whyte, P Vernon McDonald et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•1994

Mouthing and grasping objects are two common behaviors observed in young infants, although little is known about the relations between these activities. Data from two previously published experiments on 4- to 8-month-old infants (N = 133) are further analyzed to investigate if: (a) variation in object size and shape influences whether objects are mouthed after being picked up, and (b) infants modify their grip configurations in order to mouth obj…
