  • Association of Recreational Cannabis Legalization with Frequency of Using Cannabis for Sleep

Zoë Panchal, Joseph T Sakai et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2025

We examined the association of recreational cannabis legalization (RCL) with frequency of using cannabis, alcohol, and sleep medication for sleep and with co-use of cannabis with other sleep aids. We used linear regression models to examine these associations in a population-based sample of adult twins ( n = 3,141). Participants (M age = 37 (SD = 5)) were primarily White (93%), with 5% Hispanic/Latinx, and female (61%). RCL was associated with us…

  • Cognitive Control Difficulties Differentiate Callous-Unemotional Traits from Conduct Problems

    Open Access•Drew E Winters, Juliet Spitz et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2025

  • Deep brain stimulation for the treatment of substance use disorders

Open Access•Joseph T Sakai, Jody Tanabe et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Substance use disorders are prevalent, causing extensive morbidity and mortality worldwide. Evidence-based treatments are of low to moderate effect size. Growth in the neurobiological understanding of addiction (e.g., craving) along with technological advancements in neuromodulation have enabled an evaluation of neurosurgical treatments for substance use disorders. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves surgical implantation of leads into brain ta…

  • Emergence of Sex Differences in U.S. Adolescent Substance Use

Devika Bhatia, Alicia M Koontz et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2023

Background: Adolescence is a common time for experimentation with substance use and the emergence of sex differences in substance use patterns. Although similar in early adolescence, male and female substance use patterns historically diverge by young adulthood, with males using more substances than females. We aim to add to current literature by utilizing a nationally representative sample, assessing a broad range of substances used, and focusin…

  • Affective theory of mind impairments underlying callous-unemotional traits and the role of cognitive control

    Drew E Winters, Joseph T Sakai•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2023

Affective theory of mind (aToM) impairments associated with the youth antisocial phenotype callous-unemotional (CU) traits predict antisocial behaviour above CU traits alone. Importantly, CU traits associate with decrements in complex but not basic aToM. aToM is modulated by cognitive control and CU traits associate with cognitive control impairments; thus, cognitive control is a plausible mechanism underlying aToM impairments in CU traits. Becau…

  • Substance Use and Dependence Among Native Hawaiians, Other Pacific Islanders, and Asian Ethnic Groups in the United States

Joseph T Sakai, Cynthia Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The percentage of multiracial youth appears to be increasing in the United States. However, little has been disseminated about problem behaviors among multiracial Native Hawaiians, Other Pacific Islanders, and Asians on a national level. Using the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the authors compared multiple-race Native Hawaiians, Other Pacific Islanders, and Asians, while disaggregating by ethnic subgroups, with single-race individuals w…
