  • Pynk proverbs: Peeling the layers on spirituality and public health practices in the ‘P-valley’ television series

    G Greene, Yewande O Addie et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2025

Starz's 'P-Valley' television series rivets audiences with its racy themes set in the backdrop of a fictional Mississippi town's strip club called the Pynk. The provocative setting could easily overshadow the profound social and health themes embedded within each episode. This paper engages with P-Valley's second season, released in 2022 as edutainment, which represents an American cultural group's approaches to coping with public health challeng…

  • Canadian Civil Engineers Pre-1850: Professionals Before Professionalization

    Open Access•Richard White, R L White•ARTICLE•Scientia Canadensis Canadian…•2009

This article argues for a thorough re-thinking of the origins of the civil engineering profession in Canada. Working from a variety of sources, the richest being the public works papers in the National Archives of Canada, the author has assembled a list of forty-three men who practised as civil engineers in Canada before the railway boom of the 1850s and for whom biographical details are known. They are overwhelmingly men of the upper middle clas…

  • F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Cumulative Portrait

    R L White•ARTICLE•Biography•1981

A consecutive and comparative reading of the biographies of F. Scott Fitzgerald not only provides a cumulative portrait of the biographical figure but also suggests that such a reading reveals something about our own collective psychological and critical response to that figure. In works by Mizener, Graham, Turnbull, Latham, Buttita, Milford, and Mayfield, Fitzgerald emerges as an accessible and appealing figure who, inspite of his willing partic…

  • The Spatial Evolution of an Industry: The Example of Broiler Production: A Reply

    R L White, H D Watts•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1978•Cited by: 1•References: 2

We reiterate the limitations we specified in our original paper, and indicate that we do not modify our views in any substantial way. WE were pleased to learn that this topic has attracted a very careful and critical reading of our paper (White and Watts, 1977a). Our general reaction to the comment is that it does not lead us to modify our views in any substantial way. Harrison develops many of the limitations we drew attention to ourselves and w…

  • The Spatial Evolution of an Industry: The Example of Broiler Production

    R L White, H D Watts•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1977•Cited by: 5•References: 3

An attempt is made to test some ideas concerning the tendency for an industry to move towards economically rational patterns as it evolves. These ideas originated from assertions made by Hoover, Tiebout, Pred and Smith. Data were collected from a sample of broiler growing plants in the East Midlands. Individual and organizational decision makers are identified and analysis of the data shows that, over a period of time, plants begin to use nearer …
