  • Contemporary perspectives of social capital building in outdoor education

    Open Access•Michael J A Down, David Hills et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adventure Education…•2026

Social capital refers to the interrelated relationships between members of specific communities. These relationships manifest through shared norms, voluntary associations, shared values, reciprocity and mutual trust. In 2008, Beames and Atencio explored the major themes of social capital and outdoor education’s impact on its development. This paper provides a series of contemporary reflections on social capital building in outdoor education by ex…

  • Collaborative Writing as Syncopated Inquiry

    Open Access•Jamie Mcphie, D A G Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2026

Power is always at play as wor(l)ds make themselves: Mutterings mattering in a political ontology. Here, desire pulls-pushes us as experimentation in pluriversal worlds: where wor(l)ds constitute each other, clash, combine, and morph. We, as people yet to come, find ourselves at the edge of possible wor(l)ds. We play with agency, (onto)politics, colonialisms – awfully serious stuff – but also humour. We do this in the context of social↔environmen…

  • Experimenting with Thought Ritual as an Indigenous Methodology in Educational Research

Open Access•Lachlan D Saunders, Scott Alterator et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Environmental…•2026

This article describes how relational processes of telling and listening to stories were central to the establishment of a doctoral project by a Larrakia traditional owner working with Indigenous and non-Indigenous supervisors. The project explores the topic of education about living with crocodiles, a totem animal for the Larrakia people. The first stage of the project involved a week-long visit by the research team to Larrakia Country, Northern…

  • Learning to Live with Dungalaba

    Open Access•Lachlan D Saunders, Scott Juke•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Environmental…•2025

In this paper, we focus on a particular example of human–wildlife conflict involving Dungalaba (Dungalaba, Saltwater Crocodile, C. porosus — this paper will interchange between the various names of the species. It is preferred to us various names as we would like to acknowledge the various ways in which people come to understand and recognise the species) (Saltwater Crocodile) in the Northern Territory, Australia. We seek to both better understan…

  • Eco-anxiety and a Desire for Hope

Open Access•Scott Juke, Robyn Fox et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Environmental…•2024

Responding to increasing concerns regarding human-induced climate change and shared commitment as environmental educators to support climate action, we crafted this article as a composite piece — an emerging method of inquiry. We are eleven contributors: the Editorial Executive of the Australian Journal of Environmental Education and two colleagues who each respond to prompts concerning our experience of climate change and our practices of climat…

  • Experiments with a Dark Pedagogy

    Open Access•Scott Juke, K Riley•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Environmental…•2024

In this article, we experiment with a form of dark pedagogy, a pedagogy that confronts haunting pasts∼presents∼futures in environmental education. We offer a conceptualisation of ghosts that enables us to creatively explore the duration of things and consider the relationality of time. We examine this through two situated contexts, engaging with entangled, yet differentiated, socioecological issues. The first issue involves the cascading impacts …

  • Learning to Confront Ecological Precarity

Open Access•Scott Juke, Scott Jukes•BOOK•Learning to Confront Ecological…•2023

  • Following lines in the landscape

Open Access•Scott Juke, Alastair G Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Environmental…•2022

Situated within a series of river journeys, this inquiry considers the role of material landscape in shaping learning possibilities and explores practices of reading landscapes diffractively. We consider ways we might pay attention to the ever-changing flux of places while experimenting with posthuman pedagogical praxis. Methodologically, we embrace the post-qualitative provocation to do research differently by enacting a new empiricism that does…

  • Thinking with a landscape

    Open Access•Scott Juke•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Environmental…•2021

This paper proposes some possibilities for thinking with a landscape as a pedagogical concept, inspired by posthuman theory. The idea of thinking with a landscape is enacted in the Australian Alps (AA), concentrating on the contentious environmental dilemma involving introduced horses and their management in this bio-geographical location. The topic of horses is of pedagogical relevance for place-responsive outdoor environmental educators as both…

  • The wisp of an outline ≈ Storying ontology as environmental inquiry↔education

    Open Access•Scott Juke, D A G Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Environmental…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 14

They thought they felt something , perhaps. The wisp of an outline not distinct enough to trace. Good. They circled it, at times, and at other times found themselves within. As they walked (a sort of walking. Figurative but real. Digital, but here. Over months of events), it curled open and headed in several directions. Foldings in the backcloth that furrowed them along until, as they walked and talked, they felt that perhaps a territory was beco…

  • Thinking through making

    Scott Juke•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2020•References: 13

Remake activities reuse and recycle waste materials, working them into something useful. The experiential activity seems to be prevalent, yet limited literature covers creative ways of thinking about pedagogical approaches. This paper examines some of the emerging waste education literature before exploring further possibilities for remake activities, using the example of paddle making as a pedagogical practice in outdoor, environmental and susta…

  • More-than-human stories

    Scott Juke, Ya Reeves•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 29

This research draws upon pedagogical experimentation on a ski-touring journey in the Australian Alps, building upon place-responsive pedagogies in outdoor environmental education with insight from new materialist and posthuman theory. In particular, this research focusses on the generative potential of considering co-productions and assemblages that include the materiality of a more-than-human world. Combining place-responsive and new materialist…
