  • Multiproxy paleoecological reconstruction of prehistoric land-use history in the western region of the lower Río Verde Valley, Oaxaca, Mexico

    Open Access•Michelle Goman, Arthur A Joyce et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 14

Paleoecological archives from three paleomeander sites and one archeological feature located in the lower Río Verde Valley, Oaxaca, Mexico, are used to develop a spatial understanding of the patterns of prehistoric agricultural land use over the last ~3000 years. Multiproxy paleoecological data at each site (i.e. magnetic susceptibility, micro- and macroscopic charcoal, pollen and stable carbon isotopes) provide a history of land use. By examinin…

  • Comment on “Holocene aridity and storm phases, Gulf and Atlantic coasts, USA” by Ervin G. Otvos, 2005, Quaternary Research 63, 368–373

    Open Access•Michelle Goman, David S Leigh•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

  • Stratigraphic evidence for anthropogenically induced coastal environmental change from Oaxaca, Mexico

    Open Access•Michelle Goman, Arthur A Joyce et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Previous interdisciplinary paleoenvironmental and archaeological research along the Río Verde Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, showed that Holocene erosion in the highland valleys of the upper drainage basin triggered geomorphic changes in the river's coastal floodplain. This article uses stratigraphic data from sediment cores extracted from Laguna Pastoría, an estuary in the lower Río Verde Valley, to examine changes in coastal geomorphology potentiall…

  • Wet early to middle Holocene conditions on the upper Coastal Plain of North Carolina, USA

    Open Access•Michelle Goman, David S Leigh•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

A peat core from a cutoff paleochannel of Little River on the upper Coastal Plain of North Carolina provides a continuous pollen record of environmental change for the past 10,500 years and includes a sedimentary record of overbank floods. Palynological and sedimentary data indicate that the early to middle Holocene was wetter than previously suggested from lake sites in the southeastern United States. The period from 9000 to 6100 cal yr B.P. is …

  • Trends in River Flow Affecting the Northeastern Reach of the San Francisco Bay Estuary over the Past 7000 Years

Open Access•Michelle Goman, Lisa Wells et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

A variety of stratigraphic analyses (particle grain size, iron concentration, loss on ignition, and macrofossils) from sediments obtained from two marsh sites are used to reconstruct a middle to late Holocene record of stream flow into San Francisco Bay. Browns Island, a freshwater/brackish site, is located at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers and is dominated by stands of Scirpus americanus. Peyton Hill is a brackish site l…

  • A 5000-year record of agriculture and tropical forest clearance in the Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico

    Open Access•Michelle Goman, Roger Byrne•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Cited by: 34•References: 6

We present pollen and microscopic charcoal evidence from securely dated lake sediments, located in the Tuxtlas region of Veracruz, Mexico. Two periods of agricultural activity are recognized. The earliest phase reflects a low level of forest clearance and agriculture. The data provides a minimum date of 4830 cal. BP for the introduction of maize agriculture to the region. The second phase indicates intensive and prolonged human activity within th…
