  • Societal Sentience

    Open Access•Pru Hobson-West, Ashley Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2018•Cited by: 12•References: 54

The use of nonhuman animals as models in research and drug testing is a key route through which contemporary scientific knowledge is certified. Given ethical concerns, regulation of animal research promotes the use of less "sentient" animals. This paper draws on a documentary analysis of legal documents and qualitative interviews with Named Veterinary Surgeons and others at a commercial laboratory in the UK. Its key claim is that the concept of a…

  • Palaeo-environments and human experience

    Open Access•Althea Davies, A G Davies•ARTICLE•Archaeological Dialogues•2012

As a palaeo-ecologist, working with historians has made me look critically at the strengths and limitations of my discipline. Resisting the temptation to defer to documents that, however partial or biased, remain far closer to human experience of the land than any pollen sequence, is essential (see Davies and Watson 2007; Hamilton et al. 2009). Richard Tipping (2004) recognized this lure when he distinguished two philosophical approaches to inter…

  • Gender differences in HIV risk behaviour of injecting drug users in Edinburgh

    A G Davies, Nicola J Dominy et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1996

A multi-site sample of currently-injecting drug users (IDUs) comprising 344 men and 136 women was recruited in Edinburgh. Sixty-seven per cent of the sample said they had at some time used injecting equipment already used by another person and 25% admitted doing so in the 6 months before interview. Whereas women who injected with used equipment obtained it predominantly from a sexual partner, for men the source was more often a close friend or so…

  • Determinants of Variation in Tropical Forest Primate Biomass

    Open Access•John F Oates, George H Whitesides et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology•1990

To explore sources of variation in tropical forest primate biomass, and, in particular, to test the hypothesis that soil conditions are a major ultimate determinant of the biomass of colobine monkeys and other primates, we compared data on the soils, vegetation, and primate community at a site in West Africa (Tiwai Island, Sierra Leone) with information from other sites, especially two other African sites (Douala—Edea in Cameroon, and Kibale Fore…

  • Food selection by two South-east Asian colobine monkeys (Presbytis rubicunda and Presbytis melalophos) in relation to plant chemistry

Open Access•A G Davies, Elizabeth L Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•Biological Journal of the Linnean…•1988

The diets of the banded leaf monkey (Presbytis melalophos) at Kuala Lompat in the Krau Game Reserve of West Malaysia and the red leaf monkey (Presbytis rubicunda) in Sepilok Virgin Jungle Reserve, Sabah, East Malaysia have been examined in relation to plant chemistry. Both monkeys spent about half their time eating foliage, and about half their time eating fruits and seeds. They both favoured leaves with high digestibility (due to relatively low …

  • Arctic cruise of H.M. Submarine Ambush , 1948

    Open Access•A Davies, A G Davies•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1950

On 12 February 1948, H.M. Submarine Ambush sailed from Rothesay, Isle of Bute, to carry out a prolonged investigation into the effects of “snorting” in rough weather and conditions of extreme cold. H.M. Submarine Ambush , built since the end of the war, is a vessel of some 1350 tons surface displacement, 287 ft. long, embodying a large number of the latest developments including “snort” and radar. Apart from scientific measuring instruments, no s…
