Toward a unified field theory of libido and aggression: Introducing Delta as the singular id dynamic in drive theory
Although tension reduction is a key principle in drive theory, there are clear dynamic aspects of libido expression aimed at increased tension levels. In a paradigmatic shift from the Freudian conflict model, tension reduction and tension enhancement dynamics are re-conceptualized as valences toward the processes of tension reduction and tension enhancement, rather than toward the respective states of reduced tension or enhanced tension. We posit…
Survivor guilt: A critical review from the lens of the Holocaust
Survivor guilt is a construct which is ill defined in the literature. Disparate overlapping and inconsistent formulations are outlined and critiqued from the orientation of reactions of Jewish Holocaust victims. Utilizing the perspective of Defense Mechanism Theory, guilt is explored as an adaptive construct of mastery and survival in extreme conditions. Aspects of culpability in guilt are examined. Brief quotes from survivor narratives are prese…
Negative emotionality and relationships with God among religious Jewish Holocaust survivors
For those who believe in God, tragedy and misfortune often raise internal emotional and religious dissonance. Regardless of one's theological stance, emotional reactions to the Holocaust can be expected to elicit negative feelings towards God, resembling the reactions one would experience towards parents or caretakers who perpetrate or facilitate aggression. Coining the term “theistic object relations” to reflect the maturity level of relationshi…
Conceptualization of hostile psychopathy and sadism: Drive theory and object relations perspectives
A distinct formulation of hostile psychopathy is presented, based on analytic clinical experience with psychopathic youth and adults. Two psychodynamic conceptualizations of aggression are presented – one connoting a basic destructive drive, the other portraying aggression as a means of ensuring gratification and countering frustration. Following Meloy's (1988 Meloy, J. R. 1988. The psychopathic mind: Origins, dynamics, and treatment, Northvale, …
The Role of Sexuality in Sadism: Object Relations and Drive Theory Perspectives
The sexual components of sadism are conceptualized within the contexts of different forms of sadism. In aggression-drive sadism, sexuality is seen as a generalization of instinctual reactivity. Parallels are presented of such spillover between aggression and anxiety and even between aggression and oral impulses, with the notion that any areas of excitation or partial impulses can be energized by the acute release of energy in another domain. Anot…
Academic Cheating as a Function of Defense Mechanisms and Object Relations
This study examined relationships between academic cheating behaviors by using self-reports of past cheating behavior, providing a situational experiment with the opportunity to cheat, and evaluating defense mechanisms and object relations as measured by the Defense Mechanisms Inventory. Subjects included 75 female and 8 male university students ranging in age from 18 to 51 years ( M = 25.5, SD = 6.9). Analysis showed variations in students' self…
Reliability of a Modified People of Color Racial Identity Attitude Scale and a White Racial Identity Attitude Scale for a Sample of Master's Counseling Students
The reliabilities of Helms' People of Color Racial Identity Attitude Scale and White Racial Identity Attitude Scale when used with a sample of master's counseling students were explored for modified versions. Reliabilities were assessed using Cronbach alpha as a measure of internal consistency, and temporal stabilities were measured. Results were consistent with previous findings, with coefficients alpha ranging from .67 to .77 for the modified P…
Ego Function Assessment of Nonclinical Individuals
Ego Function Assessment was adapted into a self-report inventory yielding 12 operationalized function measures. 426 respondents from a stratified sample completed the inventory. In addition, 42 respondents completed the inventory twice within a 20-day period. A hierarchical algorithm was used to revise the 12 scales to maximize internal consistencies. Their stabilities were assessed by analyzing the retest scores. Standardization, reliability, an…
Self-Effacing Wit as a Response to Oppression: Dynamics in Ethnic Humor
Theories of self-effacing ethnic humor are analyzed from the perspectives of psychological defense and acculturation. These processes are contrasted with masochism as explanations of self-directed wit. Developmental paradigms are appealed to in conceptualizing the sociocultural function of humor. Identification with the aggressor is conceptualized as a transitional mechanism to assimilate the minority into the host culture. Turning against the se…

Cultural Estrangement Revisited: A Contemporary Adaptation with Reference to Gender, and to Ethnic and Racial Foci
Cultural estrangement was originally formulated as a measure of alienation, and operationalized as the extent to which one's opinions differ from those of primary and secondary identifcation groups. In the original empirical measure, four items measured the consistency of one's opinions with those of relatives, friends, coreligionists, and co-citizens, respectively. This study added three items deemed salient to group identity in contemporary soc…

Defense Mechanisms and Object Relations as Factors in Marital Satisfaction
Reliability of the Weak Opiate Withdrawal Scale for Inner-City Opiate Users
The reliability (Kuder-Richardson 20) of the 84-item Weak Opiate Withdrawal Scale was estimated for a sample of 70 inner-city men who used opiates and had passed through the acute withdrawal stage. Analysis suggested modification of the scale to exclude negatively worded as well as cognitively sophisticated items which elicit unreliable and paradoxical responses from this population
Measurement of Defenses in Special Populations: Revision of the Defense Mechanisms Inventory
The Defense Mechanisms Inventory (DMI) has been standardized for the general and minority populations and used in counseling settings and in scores of interpersonal psychology studies. Guidance and research experience with the DMI has indicated that the requirement of choosing most representative and least representative item options can introduce inaccuracies and promote peculiar response sets, particularly among certain respondents with learnin…
Marital Satisfaction and Sex-Roles in a New York Metropolitan Sample
145 married men and 143 married women completed Snyder's 1981 Marital Satisfaction Inventory and the Bern Sex-role Inventory (Short Version). Analyses showed that scores on femininity correlated with more marital satisfaction indices than did scores on masculinity. Masculinity correlated with more marital satisfaction indices for men than for women. Finances showed no relationship with the Bern indices. All of the statistically significant correl…

Sexual and Racial Discrimination in Service-Seeking Interactions: A Field Study in Fast Food and Commercial Establishments
Observers at fast food restaurants and banks in New York City catalogued the sex and race of 492 customers and of the cashiers who were chosen by those customers. Data analysis showed that black customers preferred black cashiers while white customers preferred white cashiers. In contrast, female cashiers were preferred by both male and female customers, although the tendency was somewhat more pronounced for women. Also documented was an apparent…
The Influence of Hair Color on Eliciting Help: Do Blondes Have More Fun
A review of the literature suggests that hair color influences the quality of interpersonal interactions. In a factorially designed study, two male and two female confederates (Cs) encountered 72 male and 72 female street pedestrians (Ss) asking for help. Cs wore brunette wigs for half of their interactions and blonde wigs for the rest. Results showed that while women helped Cs equally regardless of their gender, men helped women more than they h…
Preference for Counseling and Psychotherapy as Related to Preoedipal Fixation
Preference for a particular mode of psychotherapy was hypothesized to relate to psychoanalytically derived characterological attributes of the potential client. Specifically, psychoanalysis was seen as a mode which enhances dependency within the client and fosters an air of intimacy in the treatment, while behavior therapy was seen as consonant with a more aloof stance between client and therapist, involving concrete and rigid procedures. It was …
Partial impulse erogeneity as a function of fixation and object relations
The psychoanalytic theory of adult erogeneity is analyzed with respect to differential sexual and foreplay activities. Psychosexual fixation within any of the basic stages of oral, anal, or phallic development was hypothesized to correlate negatively with adult erogeneity in that respective area. The overall investment in sexuality across the erogenous areas was expected to be a function of the general level of development within the object relat…

Interpersonal Looking as a Function of Status, Self-Esteem, and Sex
The incidence of looking at peers and at a figure in authority was recorded in unisex dyads of 20 men and 22 women. Differential looking at the authority (female experimenter) vs looking at peers was a positive function of self-esteem for men but not for women. These results do not support the notion that looking connotes a lack of self-esteem, while confirming other sex differences previously reported
Disgust and Preoedipal Fixation
Psychoanalytic theory posits that as development proceeds through various psychosexual stages, early desires may turned into revulsion, in order that one may meet the demands of the ~xternal world and the superego (Greenson, 196i, p. 371). In his early work, Freud (1897) anticipated this notion by equating the unpleasure experienced from the memory-excitation of abandoned sexual zones with the feeling of disgust. It follows that the degree of dis…

Anal Erotism and Anal Characterology
Psychosexual developmental theory implies that adult anxiety concerning a particular body part may derive from preoedipal fixation during childhood around the corresponding erotogenic area. Since flight is the most common reaction to anxiety, it was hypothesized that persons with high anal fixation would spend less time in the lavatory than others, since the lavatory would be expected to raise anxiety levels in that area. In this study 53 men and…
Humor Preference as a Function of Preoedipal Fixation
Psychoanalytic theory predicts that humor preference is a derivative of unresolved childhood conflicts. Students' Rorschach protocols were analyzed to yield measures of preoedipal fixation. The students were given decks of jokes to rank from most to least funny. Results showed that the ranking of jokes was a function of the fixation measures on the Rorschach for women only but not for men
Use of the Defensive Orientation Construct as a Predictor of Acceptance of Feedback
The construct of defensive orientation is elaborated as a bipolar continuum which contrasts internal vs external styles in reacting to environmental events, paralleling the delineations in object relations theory. The tendency to accept feedback was hypothesized to be a function of defensive orientation; their relationship was tested by analyzing the reactions of 63 students to both fictitious and veridical feedback about personality tests. Resul…
