  • Heidegger. Precursor of Dialetheism

    Elena Ficara•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

  • Introduction. Logic and Politics

Franca d’Agostini, Elena Ficara et al.•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2024

The aim of this special issue is to explore the intersections of logic, intended as the formal science of valid consequence, and politics, the practical science of associated life. The analyses here provided deal with the theme in two ways: by considering what logic can do for politics, so proposing possible formalizations of political arguments, or using logical notions and tools to interpret political facts and problems; by considering what pol…

  • Logic and Discrimination

Elena Ficara•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2024

The paper is about the connection between logic and discrimination, with special focus on Plumwood’s ideas in her groundbreaking article ‘The Politics of Reason. Towards a Feminist Logic’ (1993). Although Plumwood’s paper is not focused on the notion of discrimination, what she writes is useful for illuminating some basic mechanisms of thought that are at the basis of discriminatory practices. After an introductory section about the concepts of l…

  • Introduction

Elena Ficara, Graham Priest•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2023

The idea at the basis of this special issue is that reopening the old debate about the logical status of Hegel's dialectics is extremely interesting, for various reasons. The first reason is that a new Hegel is circulating, nowadays, in the philosophical literature, with specific reference to Hegel's dialectical logic and its relation to the history and philosophy of logic. This development deserves to be accounted for. Secondly, new research abo…

  • Hegelian Conjunction, Hegelian Contradiction

Jc Beall, Elena Ficara•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2023

Understanding what is the strictly formal import of Hegel's view is something on which few analytic philosophers have seen time worth spending. Still in our view there is enough in Hegel's work to suggest that a formal account of his dialectial process might be profitable both for better understanding Hegel's ideas and for introducing a new sort of glutty logic. The focus of our analysis is Hegel's Conjunction, which, in our view, is the crucial …

  • Hegel’s Interpretation of the Liar Paradox

Franca d’Agostini, Elena Ficara•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2022

In his Lectures on the History of Philosophy, Hegel develops a subtle analysis of Megarian paradoxes: the Liar, the Veiled Man and the Sorites. In this paper, we focus on Hegel's interpretation of the Liar. We note that in Hegel's treatment there are positive suggestions for a new analysis of the paradox. Faced with the Liar's sentence ‘μ’ that says ‘“μ” is false’, Hegel's idea is that the conjunction ‘μ and not μ’ is to be held true, but the two…

  • The Birth of Dialetheism

Elena Ficara•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2021

The aim of this paper is to lay bare the roots of dialetheism in discussions about dialectics and dialectical logic at the time of the first development of paraconsistent logics. In other words, this essay is the attempt to write the first step of a history of dialetheism. I consider, first, the logico-philosophical terrain in which dialetheism was born: the discussions on what was called at that time ‘dialectical logic’ and its relation to parac…

  • The Form of Truth

    Elena Ficara•BOOK•Form of Truth•2020•Cited by: 2

This book is a consideration of Hegel's view on logic and basic logical concepts such as truth, form, validity, and contradiction, and aims to assess this view's relevance for contemporary philosophical logic. The literature on Hegel's logic is fairly rich. The attention to contemporary philosophical logic places the present research closer to those works interested in the link between Hegel's thought and analytical philosophy (Stekeler-Weithofer…

  • Dialectic and Dialetheism

    Elena Ficara•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In this article, I consider the possibility of interpreting Hegel's dialectic as dialetheism. After a first basic recapitulation about the meaning of the words ‘dialetheism’ and ‘dialectic’ and a consideration of Priest's own account of the relation between dialectical and dialetheic logic in 1989, I discuss some controversial issues, not directly considered by Priest. As a matter of fact, the reflection on paraconsistent logics and dialetheism h…
