Archaeological Explorations Above and Below Ground at Horvat Midras, Judean Foothills, Israel
Horvat Midras is situated in the central Judean Foothills, approximately 6 km northeast of the Roman city of Beth Guvrin–Eleutheropolis, alongside the primary Roman route to Jerusalem. At its zenith during the Roman period in the 1st century CE, the settlement spanned over 12 hectares, making it one of the largest ancient rural sites in the area. This Jewish settlement was destroyed during the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132–136 CE).Our excavation team un…
The Dome of the Rock in Light of the Development of Concentric Martyria in Jerusalem
Founded by Oleg Grabar in 1983, Muqarnas is the first academic journal devoted to art, architectural history, archaeology, as well as all aspects of Islamic visual and material cultures, historical and contemporary. Full-length articles are accompanied by shorter submissions grouped under a separate section titled “Notes and Sources,” for which we particularly welcome studies that introduce textual and visual primary sources. Muqarnas is sponsore…

The Account of Caesarea by the Piacenza Pilgrim and the Recent Archaeological Discovery of the Octagonal Church in Caesarea Maritima
This article presents a case in which information derived from a written historical source, which is considered distorted, may be clarified by archaeological discoveries, and archaeological enigmas may be explained by the historical text. Hitherto, the description of Caesarea Maritima by the Piacenza Pilgrim (c. 570 AD) has been considered as a distorted report, combining and confusing two cities in the Holy Land named Caesarea: Caesarea Philippi…

What is Correlated
Cronholm ( 1965) has given formulas for rapid computation of the Pearson r between frequencies or proportions of observations which fall into mutually exclusive and exhaustive categories on a nominal (or higher order) scale. Such an r is uncommon enough to have been mistakenly interpreted as being between nominally scaled measures. This error is avoided when the value and identification of an observation are distinguished. Let us define a basis t…
Intraclass Correlation as an Approximation to the Coefficient of Generalizability
The theory of generalizability (Cronbach, et al., 1963) regards a measure as sampled from a universe of comparable but not necessarily equivalent measures. The most suitable index of agreement would be the average of the squared correlations of the measures with the average of all measures. Since this cannot be directly determined, the intraclass coefficient is used. Comparison of the two indices for hypothetical universes shows that they agree c…
