  • The Ecological Tasks of Poetry

    Keala Jewell•ARTICLE•Italian Culture•2020•References: 1

In the history of European philosophy and culture, women have been both linked to nature and excluded from writing. Because of this, feminist poets face the task of rethinking the two realms together. This essay argues that Biancamaria Frabotta’s poems experiment with alternative stories of women’s intimacy with “nature.” Her poems include an expansive natural world together with distinctive narratives of a woman writer’s selfhood. The language a…

Hans manages to prolong his life by offering a chicken bone to the witch's touch; blind and incapable of believing that chicken bones serve a purpose, she takes the bone for a child's finger. If we look at this order, when visible, with the eyes of abstract reason, it appears disqu…

The subjectless gerund which follows the colon in my title outlines a dilemma: from what vantage point can one operate a deconstruction of the past-a past solidified into an architectural or an urbanistic configuration, a past which becomes visible only when top layers are erased? In Rome, even the slightest disturbances may threaten the layers and pockets of void which make up the terrain. Exposed surfaces may vanish into thin air, like the fres…

Conrad writes in his 1920 preface that Verloc's gesture is in fact so inane and fatuous that it cannot be explained even with the key of irrationality and that the unforeseen heroism of Mrs. Verloc only stands to demonstrate the chance nature of the act of liberty generated in her by contemplation of the death of a loved one. This ironic observation around which Conrad constructs his novel (life does not stand up under close inspect…

  • Corporal Controversy

    Keala Jewell•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1985

Mario Luzi's most recent volume of verse, Alfuoco delta controversia (1978), contains a series of five poems grouped under the title In corpo vile. The poems concern the controversial function of the human body in belief systems and in human behaviour. One poem depicts acrobats on a trapeze and likens them to the prophets, and a second poem presents the torment of a boxing match which repeats an empty ritual of corporal violence. Both poems caref…
