Identification of stratigraphic duplication using radiocarbon dating
A large-scale outcrop was exposed along the newly constructed road access to the Kumamoto Earthquake Museum “KIOKU” (former Tokai University Aso Campus). Multiple layers of tephra and paleosols cover the Sawatsuno lava (27 ± 6 K-Ar ka) in this outcrop. Three (3) characteristic tephra layers: Kusasenrigahama Pumice (Kpfa: ca. 32.5 cal ka BP) from Kusasenrigahama crater in Aso caldera, Aira Tn (AT: ca. 30 cal ka BP) and Kikai Akahoya (K-Ah: ca. 7.3…
Landslide Disaster Triggered by July 2020 Heavy Rainfall in the Southern Part of Kumamoto Prefecture, Southwestern Japan
Intense rainfall related to a stationary front on July 3-4, 2020 (maximum total 513 mm; maximum 4-hour rainfall 260 mm) triggered many landslides and floods in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, southwestern Japan. The distribution of landslides coincided with the highest concentration of rainfall in the region. The July 4, 2020 landslides were concentrated mainly in Ashikita and Tsunagi towns by the Yatsushiro Sea. Most of the lan…
Vegetation Changes around Haven Lake, Adak Island, Central Aleutians, Alaska, Determined from Pollen Analysis
We collected peat sediments (sediment core ADK13083002) from Haven Lake on the north side of Adak Island (central Aleutian Islands, Alaska) to determine whether the vegetation has changed. We confirmed the presence of six tephra layers, including Forty Years (0.3 cal ka BP), T2, YBO (3.3 cal ka BP), Intermediate (6.4 cal ka BP), Main (9.5 cal ka BP), and T6. We identified four major pollen assemblage zones (HL-1 to HL-4, in descending order) in t…
Tephra identification and radiocarbon chronology of sediment from Paitan Lake at the northern part of Luzon Central Plain, Philippines
AMS 14 C Dates and Major Element Composition of Glass Shards of Late Pleistocene Tephras on Tanegashima Island, Southern Japan
Four late Pleistocene tephra layers—Tane I (Tn1), II (Tn2), III (Tn3), and IV (Tn4) in ascending order—are intercalated between widespread tephras, Kikai-Tozurahara (K-Tz: 95 ka) and Aira-Tn (AT: 30 cal kBP), on Tanegashima Island, in southern Japan. Paleolithic ruins such as the Yokomine C and Tatikiri archaeological sites were excavated from the loam layer between the Tn4 and Tn3 tephras. To refine the chronological framework on the island, we …
Revised stratigraphy of Holocene tephras on Ulleung Island, South Korea, and possible correlatives for the U-Oki tephra
Widespread tephras in sediments from lake Ichi-no-Megata in northern Japan
The Irosin co-ignimbrite ash-fall deposit
AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Holocene Tephra Layers on Ulleung Island, South Korea
Ulleung Island, a large stratovolcano, is located in the western part of the Japan Sea (East Sea), 130 km off the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula. The Ulleung-Oki (U-Oki) is a widely distributed tephra in and around the Japan Sea, and has an age of 10.7 cal ka BP obtained from the Lake Suigetsu data set (central Japan). Of the 7 tephra layers (U-7 to -1) on the island, the pumiceous U-4, U-3, and U-2 tephra layers are petrochemically and pe…
