  • Paleoenvironmental Reconstructions at a Megamammal Hunting Site in the Late Pleistocene of the Pampas (Argentina)

    Marcela S Tonello, Gabriela S Hassan et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2026•References: 52

Megafauna in South America became extinct by the end of the Late Pleistocene and the relative role of human influence, climate, and other indirect factors in driving these population declines is still a matter of debate. The Campo Laborde archeological site (Pampas, Argentina) offers an exceptional opportunity to understand the complex interactions between climate, ecosystems, and human populations during that time. This study integrates biologic…

  • Human occupation strategies and related environmental-climate during the middle and late Holocene in central Pampas of Argentina

    Open Access•Pablo G Messineo, Marcela S Tonello et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 10

The main objective of this work is to generate and integrate interpretations of human occupation strategies and inferences of the environmental-climatic conditions in the central Pampas during the middle and late Holocene. We present a novel archeological–geological–paleoecological analysis in the area of the Cabeza de Buey lake, placed in an aeolian landscape. During the middle Holocene, two events of human occupations were recognized at Laguna …

  • Holocene changes in trophic states of shallow lakes from the Pampa plain of Argentina

    Open Access•Silvina Stutz, C Marcela Borel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Changes in trophic status of shallow lakes from the southeastern Pampa plain of Argentina are evaluated based on the relative presence of submerged macrophytes and phytoplankton. The evolution of lake Lonkoy is reconstructed for the last 5000 years, using pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) and macrofossil remain analyses, revealing three main lake stages. A macrophyte-dominated clear lake prevailed until 670 cal yr BP. Afterwards, the lake ch…

  • Quantitative reconstruction of Holocene precipitation changes in southern Patagonia

Open Access•Marcela S Tonello, María Virginia Mancini et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Holocene variations in annual precipitation ( P ann ) were reconstructed from pollen data from southern Argentinian Patagonia using a transfer function developed based on a weighted-averaging partial least squares (WA-PLS) regression. The pollen–climate calibration model consisted of 112 surface soil samples and 59 pollen types from the main vegetation units, and modern precipitation values obtained from a global climate database. The performance…
