  • Inland and Maritime Adaptations in the Southern Cone

R Barberena, Marianne Christensen et al.•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of South…•2026

The Southern Cone of South America is the last continental landmass colonized by humans during the late Pleistocene. From a global perspective, this part of the continent can be characterized as a large peninsular territory where Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego Island are surrounded by the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. In this chapter we summarize the main diachronic trends of economic and geographic change for the human societies inhabiting the Pa…

David Cuenca-Solana, David Cuenca Solana et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2026•References: 21

The archipelagos of southwestern Patagonia were historically inhabited by hunter-gatherer societies characterized by a maritime-oriented lifeway and a knowledge of navigation techniques. These canoeros societies inhabited this extensive territory from approximately 7500 years BP until the processes of social disintegration and ethnocide that took place during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The use of shells as tools constituted a distinc…

  • A Novel Child Burial from Tierra del Fuego

A Prieto, Susana Morano et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This paper reports the archaeological materials from a unique child burial recently discovered in Tierra del Fuego. Preliminary analyses are consistent with the idea that the burial belongs to the Selk’nam culture. Although the Selk’nam archaeological record is abundant, very little is known about their mortuary practices. In this well-preserved burial, the human remains were accompanied by an unusual set of grave goods, which have not been descr…

• Phenol Formaldehyde Revisited—Novolac Resins for the Treatment of Degraded Archaeological Wood

    Open Access•Marianne Christensen, F K Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2015•References: 18

Archaeological wood is usually severely degraded. The Norwegian Viking Age O seberg find exemplifies problems arising due to past conservation treatments and the need for new types of preservatives. Phenol formaldehyde ( PF ) has been investigated as a consolidant for alum‐treated wood. X‐ray tomography has revealed that it is possible to obtain a porous structure inside the wood, ensuring ethical acceptability by allowing re‐treatment. In order …

In this volume, Christensen outlines a new method for the identification of worked material through its physio-chemical (or mineral and organic) components. This assumes that, in modifying or making tools, micro-fragments of this material would stay at the edge of the tools. Here, tools which were used to work ivory, as opposed to antler and bone, are considered. The analysis combines experimental and archaeological data and takes tow case studie…

Grooved stones appear in the Levantine sequence during the Natufian culture. Little attention was paid to these tools as long as they were considered polishing devices for bone tools. More recently some interest was aroused when they were viewed as possible arrow shaft straighteners. Nevertheless both interpretations suffer from lack of consistency since they are based mainly on ethnographic comparisons and modern experiments. This paper reports …
