Dung Temper in Neolithic Pottery of the Eastern Fertile Crescent as an Indicator of Animal Domestication
Since the early 7th millennium BC, when ceramics had become widespread in the Eastern Fertile Crescent, specifically in central valleys and the western foothills of the Zagros, they were tempered exclusively with organic plant remains. Here, we outline the findings of the study of this temper using microscopic technological analysis, X-ray tomography and spherulite analysis, upholding the suggestion that dung was present in the paste. The samples…
Dung Temper in Neolithic Pottery of the Eastern Fertile Crescent as an Indicator of Animal Domestication
The Socioeconomic Structure of the Upper Kızılırmak Basin in Light of the Middle Age Settlement System
The Upper Kızılırmak Basin is a strategic settlement area that developed under both Byzantine and Turkish rule during the Middle Ages. Archaeological data from the region show pattern of population distribution, revealing that settlements were based on agriculture and animal husbandry. This form of production was decisive in shaping architectural structures and communication networks, as well as how the environment was used. The natural resources…

Reflection on the Sunrise Positions in Early and Middle Bronze Age Extramural Cemeteries in Anatolia
In Early and Middle Bronze Ages extramural cemeteries in Anatolia, burials are occasionally oriented towards the rising sun in various seasons. The orientations of Early Bronze Age burials cluster towards the sunrise in autumn and winter; however, this differs in Middle Bronze Age cemeteries. Burials in Çavlum are mainly oriented towards the rising sun in summer, those in Yanarlar in spring, and in Gordion the winter months. The orientations towa…

Ancient mountain routes connecting central Anatolia to the upper Euphrates region
Field surveys carried out within the upper Kızılırmak region have shown that the natural route-ways passing through the area have connected central Anatolia to eastern Anatolia throughout the ages. The route from north-central Anatolia reaches the Kızılırmak river by passing through the plains of Çekerek, Yıldızeli and Yıldız. The Kızılırmak river can be crossed on horseback where the road ends. A second route connects south-central Anatolia to S…

Early Bronze Age Chamber Tomb Complexes at Gre Virike (Period IIA) on the Middle Euphrates
Gre Virike is on a pebble terrace on the Euphrates, some 10 km to the north of the Turkish-Syrian border. In the second half of the third millennium B.C., limestone structures attached to subterranean chamber tombs were built on the mound summit. The structures consist of three rows of chambers, one of which is attached to an undisturbed chamber tomb. The other two rows probably also belong to two chamber tombs, which were heavily disturbed. Plas…
