Archaeozoology and Biomolecular Analysis in Archaic Phoenician Gadir—The Site of Sagasta–Tinte (9th–8th Centuries BC)
Faunal remains constitute one of the main sources of evidence for reconstructing foodways and economic practices in Phoenician societies. Archaeological research conducted over recent decades in the Iberian Peninsula has highlighted their importance for understanding food production processes, maintenance activities, and animal consumption patterns linked to livestock management, fishing, shellfish gathering, and the use of bone for tool making. …
Estimating European Pilchard ( Sardina pilchardus ) Total Length
Throughout its area of distribution, in particular in the Iberian Peninsula, the European pilchard ( Sardina pilchardus Walbaum 1792) has been an extensively exploited species since Prehistoric times. Our knowledge of the past fisheries of this clupeid nevertheless remains limited due to a scarcity of ichthyoarchaeological data, which reflects, among other things, a lack of systematic fine sieving in archaeological excavations until recent times.…
Unravelling the role of Atlantic fish in medieval and early modern Western Mediterranean foodways
The development of the Atlantic fish trade marked a major shift in European diets during the Medieval and modern periods. Although this trade is well documented in historical and archaeological records, its impact on consumption patterns remains poorly understood, particularly in the western Mediterranean, where ichthyoarchaeological studies are limited. This study reconstructs the trade and consumption of two key Atlantic species (European hake …
Archaeobotanical and Zooarchaeological (Large Mammal Bone, Shell and Fish Remains) Data from the ‘Palace and Landscape at Palaikastro’ (Palap) Excavation Project, Crete, Greece
The dataset presented here includes four .csv files with primary archaeobotanical, large mammal bone, mollusc and fish remains data, recovered during the PALAP project at Palaikastro, east Crete, Greece, between 2013 and 2015. The data describe bioarchaeological remains from the south-east sector of the Bronze Age town at Palaikastro, recovered with systematic sampling and employing flotation, dry-sieving and hand collection. All remains were ide…
Mediterranean polyculture revisited
This paper examines agriculture, farming and dietary resources in east Crete, and re-evaluates the role of grape and olive in its prehistoric economy, these being key in debates on the emergence of social complexity. To do so bioarchaeological, paleoenvironmental and landscape survey data from the Bronze Age town at Palaikastro and its territory are combined. The results indicate a highly compartmentalised landscape, including intensive crop cult…
New insights into the daily and symbolic use of plants during initial occupations of Formentera (Balearic Islands, Spain)
The island of Formentera, with its small extension and flat orography, was settled relatively late in Mediterranean prehistory between the third and second millennium BC. The sites presented in this paper, Cova des Fum and Cova des Riuets, offer evidence of the island’s first occupation. Cova des Fum comprises a necropolis of the Bronze Age and two sanctuary spaces (used, at least, from 2035 cal BC), with hearths and water management structures. …
In this paper we present the remains from a village of the Bronze Age in the island of Formentera. These are comparable with those recovered from the Cova des Riuets and reflect the importance of marine gastropod consumption and that of marine resources in the diet of its residents and of the populations that inhabited the Pitiussae Islands in general, who endured a tough environment with very few natural resources
The Application of Systematic Sampling Strategies for Bioarchaeological Studies in the Early Neolithic Lakeshore Site of La Draga (Banyoles, Spain)
This paper presents the multi-disciplinary sampling strategy that has been applied at the archaeological site of La Draga during the last three fieldwork campaigns (2010–2012). A preliminary evaluation of the results is presented in order to discuss the efficiency of the strategy in answering the outlined scientific questions. The strategies applied for faunal remains (one hundred per cent recovery), wood remains (selective sampling) and charcoal…
