Religiosity, Telomere Length and Preterm Birth Among Mexican and African American Women in Texas
We conducted a cross sectional study of 175 pregnant women (100 Mexican and 75 African American women) recruited from three prenatal clinics in Central and East Texas. This study explored the relationships between religiosity, telomere length, and preterm birth. Results indicated a significant association between telomere length and birth outcomes, with shorter telomeres observed in preterm births compared to full-term births. Mexican women atten…
Symptom Severity Profiles and their Associated Factors in Minoritized Men with Chronic Conditions
Individuals with chronic conditions have persistent, co-occurring symptoms affecting quality of life. Understanding symptom severity susceptibilities is critical for early risk identification, but gaps remain among racial and ethnic minority men with chronic conditions. As such, this study identifies symptom severity profiles in non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic men based on five common symptoms (fatigue, pain, shortness of breath, sleep disturbanc…
Protocol for a naturalistic study of residents living in an agriculturally-integrated (“agrihood”) neighborhood
Background: Poor nutrition and inadequate physical activity are key contributors to rising chronic disease rates across the United States. It is well-documented that neighborhood built environments play an important role in shaping these modifiable health behaviors. Agriculturally-integrated neighborhoods ("agrihoods") offer a relatively new and promising approach to health-promoting residential design and development. Centered around a working f…
Problem-solving training to improve caregiver burden and depressive symptoms among dementia caregivers
Introduction Metacognitive strategy training interventions, like Problem-Solving Training/Descubriendo Soluciones Juntos (PST/DSJ), have efficacy for improving caregiver burden and depressive symptoms. We previously demonstrated that PST/DSJ improved caregiver burden and depressive symptoms among caregivers of adults with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias (ADRD), regardless of the number of sessions or boosters received. However, these re…
Comparative effectiveness of diabetes self-management education and support intervention strategies among adults with type 2 diabetes in Texas
Background: With approximately 1-in-10 Texas estimated to be living with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), and the steadily rising healthcare costs associated with non-managed T2DM, efforts are needed to help patients manage their diabetes and avoid costly health consequences. While many diabetes self-management interventions and solutions exist to improve health among people living with T2DM, less is known about the relative effectiveness of thes…
Caregiving burdens of task time and task difficulty among paid and unpaid caregivers of persons living with dementia
Background Demands of caregivers of persons living with dementia (PLWD) are often influenced by the context of their caregiving situation. This study examines common and unique factors associated with caregiving burden in terms of task time and task difficulty among paid and unpaid caregivers of PLWD. Methods Cross-sectional baseline survey data were analyzed from 107 paid and unpaid caregivers of PLWD participating in a larger NIH-funded study a…
Perceived Discrimination in Medical Care Settings on A1c Data From the All of Us Program
Approximately 11.3% of the U.S. population has diabetes, mostly type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and maintenance of A1c levels is vital to prevent complications among patients. Perceived discrimination in medical care settings (PDMS) affects patient care, while social support may mitigate its impact. This study aims to explore the influence of PDMS on A1c levels in T2DM patients using the All of Us Research Program, which collects health data from diverse…
Effectiveness of evidence-based fall prevention programs to reduce loneliness in the United States
Introduction Falls are associated with activity limitations and injuries among older adults. An estimated 25% of older adults fall each year, and over 40% of older adults report they are lonely. Small group, evidence-based fall prevention programs are widely available in the United States and may be a strategy to improve social connectedness within our aging population. The purpose of this study was to identify the effectiveness of evidence-based…
Antiviral treatment in outpatients with herps zoster in six major areas of China, 2010–2019
Objective The objective of this study was to assess the status and trends of antiviral treatment in outpatients with herpes zoster in China. Methods Prescription data on antiviral drugs were extracted from the database of the Hospital Prescription Analysis Program of China according to the inclusion criteria. Yearly prescriptions and costs were calculated, and trends were analyzed. The trends were further stratified by age, sex, and specific drug…
Duanzi as Networked Practice
Practices oriented to digital technologies are being invented to change how people cope with crises. This study examines how Chinese netizens' networked practices (e.g., liking, sharing, or commenting) with COVID-19 related duanzi (short online satires) influenced their psychological well-being, external social support, and issue knowledge during the pandemic. The role of social capital in moderating these relations is explored. Findings from the…
Telomere Length and Preterm Birth in Pregnant Mexican-Origin Women
Lisu Syllabary
The Lisu Syllabary was designed by an illiterate farmer in the 1920s and spread widely in Weixi County in the Yunnan Province of China. Its creation process proves that it is not necessary for a primitive writing system to undergo the stage of pictograph or ideograph; rather, the concept of syllabic segmentation may arise inherently in the human mind and may be successfully used in script designing. A font library including 989 computer glyphs is…
Smart Software Can Increase Sit–Stand Desk Transitions During Active Computer Use
The objective use of table top adjustable sit-stand desks has yet to be determined, due to the lack of an effective digital evaluation method. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of computer prompt software on table top sit-stand desks to determine if there was a difference in the frequency of desk position changes. This five month, pre-post pilot study on 47 university staff members used a novel USB accelerometer sensor and co…
Effectiveness of a Lifestyle Intervention on Social Support, Self-Efficacy, and Physical Activity among Older Adults
Despite the well-recognized benefits of physical activity across the life course, older adults are more inactive than other age groups. The current study examines the effects of Texercise Select participation on self-reported sedentary, light, moderate, and vigorous physical activity. Secondarily, this study examined intervention effects on two potential facilitators of physical activity: (1) self-efficacy for being more physically active and (2)…
Global land cover mapping at 30 m resolution
Global Land Cover (GLC) information is fundamental for environmental change studies, land resource management, sustainable development, and many other societal benefits. Although GLC data exists at spatial resolutions of 300 m and 1000 m, a 30 m resolution mapping approach is now a feasible option for the next generation of GLC products. Since most significant human impacts on the land system can be captured at this scale, a number of researchers…
From Product-Country Image to National Image
This study proposes an integrated model to examine the direct and indirect effects of valenced news frames on perceived overall national image (NI) through cognitive responses to framed news coverage and the perception of product-country image (PCI). Connecting PCI and NI, this study aims to facilitate a better understanding of the formation of national image, as well as to achieve conceptual coherence about the role of valence framing in influen…
Reconciliation of Inconsistent Perspectives in Collaborative GIS
Collaborative GIS provides a spatially referenced negotiation environment for decision makers to put forward their perspectives, discuss their differences, and, ultimately, make decisions. Recent research has focused on enabling the representation of, and selection from among, different opinions, while discussion among people has been ignored. This paper reports on a discussion process aimed at reconciling inconsistent perspectives in distributed…
New Media Use, Sociodemographics, and Voter Turnout in the 2000 Presidential Election
Based on General Social Survey data, this study employs logit models to clarify the effects of new media use and sociodemographic characteristics on voter turnout in the 2000 presidential election. It also discusses the predicting power of social-demographics on new media use behavior. Findings highlight that the behavior of actively seeking political information online, which can be expected by the level of education and income of Internet users…
