Ethnic Conflict in the Fergana Valley
This study examines ethnic conflicts in the Fergana Valley region (1989, 1990, 2010) through an integrated theoretical framework that connects border politics, identity formation, and conflict resolution approaches. Drawing on original fieldwork conducted between 2020 and 2023, including 47 semi‐structured interviews with local stakeholders and regional experts, this research identifies how Soviet‐era border demarcations continue to shape contemp…
Ethnosexual boundaries in the fergana valley
This paper develops an ethnographically grounded framework for understanding ethnosexual boundaries in post-Soviet Central Asia. Focus group discussions with 100 Fergana Valley students — from Osh State University, Jalal-Abad State University, and Fergana State University — reveal a proximity paradox: 85% preferred marriage with uzoq xorij partners (South Korea, Turkey, Arab Gulf states) over linguistically and religiously proximate neighbors, ci…
Platform Affordances and Interethnic Relations
This article examines how different social media platforms shape interethnic relations in the Fergana Valley in Central Asia through their distinct technological features – what scholars call ‘platform affordances.’ Based on a 36-month digital ethnography analysing 15,683 posts from 1,247 users across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Telegram, this study reveals that platform architecture significantly influences ethnic interaction patterns. Inst…
Seven Generations and Me”
This ethnographic study examines the jety ata (seven generations) tradition in the Goyibi lineage of the Jookesek tribe, a Kyrgyz community from southern Kyrgyzstan now living in Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley. Based on 18 months of fieldwork (2022–2024), we document how this diaspora-in-place community sustains genealogical knowledge despite displacement, minority status, and political pressures. The core finding is “layered transmission”: a preser…

The Fergana Valley, a historically and ethnically diverse region in Central Asia, has experienced multiple ethnic conflicts that have significantly shaped its socio-political landscape. This paper investigates the underlying causes of these conflicts, their socio-economic and political ramifications, and their broader impact on interethnic relations. Employing historical analysis and qualitative research methods, the study examines how both past …
Ethno-anthropological and psychological analysis of modern inter-ethnic relations in the Fergana Valley
This study provides an ethno-anthropological analysis of contemporary inter-ethnic relations in the Fergana Valley, focusing on the complex interplay between cultural identity, ethnicity and intergroup dynamics within this historically diverse region. The Fergana Valley, situated at the crossroads of Central Asia, has long been a melting pot of ethnic groups, including Uzbeks, Tajiks, Kyrgyz and other minority communities. This article examines h…
