Art/Research
In this short, invited piece for the journal’s 10th anniversary issue, co- founding editors of Art/Research International, Diane Conrad and Patricia Leavy, reflect upon their experiences of envisioning an open access online journal for the publication of creative scholarly research. The journal that evolved realized the inclusive forum they sought to showcase through international and transdisciplinary scholarship that embraced the myriads of cre…
Transcorporeal Witnessing
This article seeks to extend discourses of embodiment by deploying Alaimo’s concept of transcorporeality in the context of our grappling with complexities of bearing witness to deforestation and ecological destruction in Alberta’s Tar Sands. Transcorporeality captures senses of porosity among human, nonhuman, and more-than-human bodies and constitutes a productive perspective from which to ethically engage with ecological destruction. Through our…
Engagement, Authenticity, and Advocacy in “Youth Uncensored”
“Youth Uncensored” was an applied theater project with youth affiliated with an arts-based, nonprofit organization serving street-involved youth. The organization identified the need to educate service providers about the youth’s experiences to better meet youth’s needs. The youth were involved in all aspects of the process of creating workshops for service providers, from generating content for our scenes to devising, rehearsing, and performing …
Using Alain Badiou's Ethic of Truths to Support an 'Eventful' Social Justice Teacher Education Program
In this paper, the authors articulate a social justice purpose for an undergraduate teacher education program at a major Canadian university that they hope will inform more general discussions about social justice and teaching. The thesis they explore is the necessity for social justice teaching to utilize the acquisition of subject matter as a means to examine the ways in which our individual "nexus of privilege and ignorance reflect broader str…
Rethinking ‘at-risk’ in drama education
Concern over students deemed ‘at-risk’ constructs youth as deficient and deviant without considering the experiences of youth themselves. My interest in ‘at-risk’ grows out of my previous work with youth, in various drama education contexts and the fact that youth have told me they found the label offensive. My research re-thinks ‘at-risk’ to include youths’ perceptions. My doctoral study involved doing a popular theatre project with a group of h…
Exploring Risky Youth Experiences
This article discusses a Popular Theatre project with a group of high school drama students in a rural Alberta community. As a research method, Popular Theatre draws on traditions in participatory research and performance ethnography. In our project, entitled 'Life in the Sticks,' based on students' initial claims that their issues were determined by their rural environment, Popular Theatre was a way to collectively draw out, represent and questi…
Drama as Arts-Based Pedagogy and Research
This reflective practice case study involved creating and delivering a unit for inner-city high school students that integrated drama and media literacy/production with a focus on advertising. It used socially critical or issues-based drama to examine the relationship between youth and media: to draw out and question and have them question their meanings or understandings of advertising. Interpretation of students' responses to the work and the a…
Childhood Punishment, Denial, and Political Attitudes
Political attitudes are widely regarded as the product of rational processes, despite a long-standing tradition in political psychology arguing that negative affect from childhood can be displaced onto adult political opinions (Lasswell, 1930/1960). Studies failing to demonstrate a relationship between childhood experience and adult political attitudes have neglected to take into account two important interacting variables, gender and therapy (e.…
Delegation of expanded functions to dental assistants and hygienists
One hundred and twenty-six dental offices in Washington State kept a record of each time an expanded function was performed by the dentist, hygienist, or assistant. There were five two-week recording periods starting in February 1979 and ending in February 1981. Consistent with increasing productivity, dentists most frequently delegate tasks to dental assistants rather than dental hygienists and delegate an individual task consistently if it is d…
Factors related to utilization of dental services by the elderly
A household interview survey of 883 persons aged 62 and older residing in Seattle, Washington, asked about a broad range of health care and social service issues, including the need for and use of dental care. The Anderson model of health services utilization was used to identify predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics hypothesized to affect the use of dental services. A path analysis was conducted to distinguish the direct and indirect …
Some Experimental Observations on Gastro intestinal Lesions in Behaviorally Conditioned Monkeys
Eleven of 19 monkeys used in chronic psychological-conditioning experiments developed gastrointestinal disease. Although the program for each animal was different, for the most part experiments were directed toward a study of emotional behavior. Among the lesions found were gastric hemorrhage and erosion, duodenal ulceration, enteric intussusception, and chronic colitis. In a controlled study of a single behavioral procedure (avoidance behavior),…
