Catholics, Protestants, and the Poor in Early Modern Europe
Catholics and Protestants in early modern Europe, despite theological differences concerning the role of good works in salvation, administered forms of poor relief along similar lines. Most Protestant and some Catholic reformers were determined to control begging and vagrancy and to introduce more rational methods of almsgiving. Catholics, however, were more inclined to tolerate, even to license, such questionable practices as child abandonment, …

A Ship with Two Rudders’: ‘Righetto Marrano’ and the Inquisition in Venice
In Venice on 5 October 1570: A man of ordinary height, dressed in the foreign style, with a curved black beard, was escorted into the Holy Office and asked his age. He answered, ‘Some forty years’. He was asked his name, his surname, his father, his status, his country and his employment. He answered, ‘My name is Abraham, called Righetto, my father's Num Rig (a Spaniard of Portugal), my occupation is that of an exchange-broker; I am no Christian …

Support and redeem: Charity and poor relief in Italian cities from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century
Catholics and the Poor in Early Modern Europe
A quiet revolution has occurred of late in the history of poor people and poor relief in early modern Europe. Shapeless, decentralized and infinite, like the story of most everyday things, it has depended for progress on the laborious accumulation of local examples, garnered from patchy, weedy and erratically surviving evidence; and for vitality on cerebration which outstrips research, on hypo-theses which demand to be tested in a hundred detaile…

Rich and Poor in Renaissance Venice
Dr. Nieto has done very well in his successful effort to unravel the historical significance of Juan de Valdés' thought for the Reformation in Spain and Italy. This significance is consider- able, and the investigation has been undertaken and carried out in an original way."Knowledge" and "Experience" are the key motifs which have been employed to set "Valdesian thought within the stream of Reformation thought, without considering him to be either…
