  • Montesquieu on Legislators and as a Legislator

Vickie B Sullivan, Vickie Sullivan•ARTICLE•History of Political Thought•2026

Examination of Montesquieu’s treatment of legislators in his Spirit of the Laws provides a new perspective on the scholarly debate as to whether Montesquieu approaches the global diversity he documents there with the attitude of a particularist or of a universalist. As he reveals that previous philosophic writers have served as legislators, so he himself becomes one; Montesquieu offers, in Book 12, a table of laws and corresponding punishments. T…

  • Machiavelli’s Roman and Persian Empires

    Vickie B Sullivan, Vickie Sullivan•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2026•Referencias: 18

Machiavelli appeals to the example of the Persian Empire when treating the Roman republic’s rise to power, method of rule, and decline into tyranny. When considering how Rome subjugated its neighboring cities in the Discourses on Livy, he insists that Rome used fraud in a manner akin to the Cyrus of Xenophon’s depiction; both came to power from humble beginnings through duplicity. In The Prince, Machiavelli traces how the Roman republic left a pa…

  • Montesquieu and the European Tradition

    Vickie B Sullivan•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Political Science•2020

I consider myself a fortunate author indeed to have such careful, thoughtful, and constructive readers as these four commentators. I am immensely grateful that they have applied their learning and

  • Catherine Zuckert on Machiavelli's New Understanding of Politics

    Open Access•Vickie B Sullivan, Vickie Sullivan•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

Catherine Zuckert's Machiavelli's Politics offers an unprecedented interpretation of all of Machiavelli's major works. Her interpretation places Machiavelli in his historical context as he understood it and shows Machiavelli seeking a populist alternative in politics. Because her approach and her conclusion have been championed by scholars explicitly opposed to Strauss's interpretation of Machiavelli, she intervenes in the scholarly debates on Ma…

  • Montesquieu's Teaching on the Dangers of Extreme Corrections

    Open Access•Nathaniel Gilmore, Nathaniel K Gilmore et al.•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 26

Explicitly and implicitly inThe Spirit of the Laws, Montesquieu binds together the Japanese who persecute Christians and the Inquisitors of Catholicism who persecute heretics. In seeking purity, both sets of vehement reformers impose atrocious punishments. In so binding the abuses of the East and West together, the work is an expression neither of Orientalism nor of Eurocentrism as conventionally understood. Although Montesquieu thus offers a cri…

  • Walter Moyle's Machiavellianism, declared and otherwise, in An Essay upon the Constitution of the Roman Government

Vickie B Sullivan, Vickie Sullivan•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2011

Walter Moyle's work, An Essay upon the Constitution of the Roman Government, is much more Machiavellian than it initially announces itself to be. Informed by James Harrington's and Niccolò Machiavelli's earlier commentaries on Rome, Moyle readily embraces that on which both of his predecessors agree—the desirability of a republic that seeks armed increase. Harrington, though, explicitly disagrees with Machiavelli's embrace of a tumultuous republi…

  • The Comedy and Tragedy of Machiavelli

Salvatore Di Maria, Vickie B Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Italica•2002

Italian statesman and political theorist Niccolo Machiavelli, well known as the author of Prince, wrote not only grave, cold-blooded political tracts but also comedies, poems, fables, and letters that are seemingly lighthearted. What are we to make of the two extremes in Machiavelli's writings? This volume brings together outstanding scholars in the fields of literature, political science, and history to explore the meanings of Machiavelli's lite…

An understanding of Machiavelli's assessment of Cesare Borgia inThe Princeis essential for interpreting his view of politics, but the ambiguity of that assessment has led to vastly different conclusions about Machiavelli's political teaching and Cesare's significance. We approach Machiavelli's ultimate intentions through a consideration of his more immediate concern for Italy. Machiavelli's great interest in Cesare and his criticism of this poten…

  • Neither Christian nor Pagan

    Vickie B Sullivan, Vickie Sullivan•ARTICLE•Polity•1993•Citada por: 1

Is Machiavelli to be understood as entirely sympathetic to either Christianity or paganism? This article examines the Discourses, the work in which Machiavelli praises paganism most lavishly, and argues that Machiavelli actually criticizes paganism for engendering Christianity. To overcome the politically deleterious consequences of Christianity, the author goes on to contend, Machiavelli appeals to certain Christian doctrines-entirely divorced f…
