Science, (Anti-)Communism and Diplomacy
From 1957 onwards, the "Pugwash Conferences" brought together elite scientists from across ideological and political divides to work towards disarmament. Through a series of national case studies - Austria, China, Czechoslovakia, East and West Germany, the US and USSR – this volume offers a critical reassessment of the development and work of “Pugwash” nationally, internationally, and as a transnational forum for Track II diplomacy. This major ne…
Environmental Journalism? Radio Free Europe, Charter 77 and the Making of an Environmental Agenda
The primary aim of this paper is to outline concisely the history of environmental journalism in Czechoslovakia and to compare it to the development of Radio Free Europe's environmental agenda. This comparison can help us better understand how important a role society - and by extension social constructivism - played in twentieth-century environmental history. An explanation for these discrepancies can, in my opinion, be found not only in the int…
Diplomats in Science Diplomacy
Science Diplomacy1 is a vibrant research field: this is illustrated by the growing number of scholars who are exploring the field both by studying contemporary issues and reevaluating past conflicts and political negotiations. Coming not only from the ranks of historians, scholars from international relations, Science and Technology Studies, and science management, to name a few, are exploring the history of science and diplomacy.2 Nevertheless, …
A Matter of Courtesy
In 1969, a few short months after the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, Sergei I. Prasolov, advisor to the Soviet Ambassador in Prague, informed František Šorm, President of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, at a formal meeting that he welcomed Šorm's suggestion to intensify scientific exchange between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. Šorm politely declined this offer. Behind the veneer of diplomatic courtesy on the part of both act…
Pugwash in Eastern Europe
The beginnings of Pugwash overlapped with the first stage of the process of de-Stalinization, which had a marked effect on science and on scientific cooperation across the Iron Curtain. In the international context of the late 1950s, Pugwash enabled Soviet officials and scientists to play an active part in the international community at the very point when the World Peace Council (a Soviet front organization) was experiencing its deepest crisis. …
The International Biological Program in Eastern Europe
The aim of this study is to analyse the international scientific policy of the countries of the Socialist Bloc in relation to the establishment of the International Biological Program. It focuses mainly on Czechoslovakia as one of the main active members of the IBP and as a close ally of the USSR when it entered the realm of international science policy after years of targeted isolation forced upon it during Stalinism. The study examines Soviet i…
Between Stalinism and Infrastructural Globalism
This article analyses the political, scientific, and social circumstances of the beginning of infrastructural globalism in Eastern Europe, using the example of the International Geophysical Year (1957–8). This research programme led to the establishment of the first large global infrastructures operating in Eastern Europe, i.e. behind the Iron Curtain, under the auspices of international organizations (UNESCO, ICSU). Following the Geneva conferen…

The Steppe to Europe
From Legacy and Tradition to lieux de mémoire
Pierre Nora's concept of realms (rendered by other authors also as 'sites') of memory attracted the attention of Czechoslovak historians already in early 1990s, soon after the publication of his phenomenal work Les lieux de mmoire. 1 The idea of creating a work in a similar vein appears among Czech historians with remarkable regularity but inevitably meets with serious obstacles, the most serious of which seems to be -somewhat paradoxically -the …
