The Relationship of Employment Scarcity and Perceived Threat With Ageist and Sexist Attitudes
Using theories of intergroup relations, the current research examined whether personal experiences and perceptions of employment hardship (e.g., unemployment, underemployment, perceived job insecurity, and career optimism) were associated with ageist and sexist attitudes among younger workers and male workers toward older workers and female workers, respectively. In Study 1, a survey of working adults found that, among those under 35, underemploy…

The Influence of Successful Aging at Work Upon Simulated Performance Decisions
As the age of the workforce increases, it is important to understand how information other than job performance influences the performance evaluation process and outcomes. Performance information is used as a basis for multiple organizational decisions and as such, it is critical to understand how alternative age constructs influence these important work outcomes. Although much research has been conducted using chronological age, emerging age con…

Person- and context-oriented perceptual age measures
Cleveland and Shore (1992) suggested that four perceptual age measures could be grouped into person-oriented and context-oriented factors. This study examined longitudinal data from their same sample, and tested three propositions related to the distinctiveness and usefulness of the age measures. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the factor structure proposed by Cleveland and Shore was invariant over time, and that new multi-item scales me…

Age Perceptions of Jobs
The purpose of the study was to replicate recent findings of Cleveland and Landy and compare perceptions of students and managers regarding the age-type of jobs. Significant correlations suggested that students and managers similarly evaluated the age-type of the jobs. Results are discussed in terms of threats to external validity in laboratory research
Age Perceptions of Jobs
Purpose of this study is to provide empirical information on the age perceptions of 40 managerial jobs. 120 managers were asked to complete either a frequency grid questionnaire or a numerically anchored rating scale describing their perceptions of the age distribution in each job. Jobs were classified as older, younger, or age-neutral only if results obtained using the two questionnaires provided converging classifications. Of these jobs 62% wer…
