Storytelling and political theory
Immigration and the spirit of freedom
This commentary on Immigration and Freedom explores its relationship to border abolitionist perspectives and expresses puzzlement concerning the state as the site of the ideal of a free society
Civic Confucianism and Democratic Constitutionalism in East Asia
Confucian Constitutionalism can be seen as aiming to translate constitutional democracy into the vernacular cultural language of East Asia: “Confucian democratic constitutionalism invites them to reformulate their constitutional identity and public morality in mediation of Confucian civic culture that is still in play in their social, legal, and political lives but for the institutional expression of which they lack an adequate language” (204). T…
Criticism, Confidence and the Crisis in Critique
The focus of this essay is on the crisis in critique, that is, the crisis that critique aims to produce through its questioning of what is given to us as 'natural, necessary or obligatory' limits, a crisis in the subjectivity of the audience to which the act of criticism is addressed. Starting with Foucault's reflections on the critical attitude and the distinction that he draws in comparative historical terms between two modes of the relationshi…

Gender, Displacement, and the Ethics of Protection
Focusing on the flight of women and girls from Venezuela to Brazil, and on South American refugee regimes, this paper addresses the ethics of forced displacement and the requirements of gender-responsive systems of protection. The analysis centers the voices of displaced women brought in through fieldwork in Manaus and Boa Vista, Brazil, in 2020–2022, to identify gaps and negative effects of gender-blind provision of shelter, healthcare, and othe…
The Political Philosophy of Internal Displacement
The situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has been a matter of international concern (and legal debate) since at least the late 1990s and early 2000s, and its salience has only risen in the context of extreme weather events produced by intensifying climate change. Yet political philosophy has barely touched on this issue, despite its close connection to, and potential significance as a site of reflection on, lively and expansive debate…
A Round Table Conversation on the State of Hiring and Labour in Theatre and Performance Studies in Canada
This article summarizes a round table on the state of hiring and labour in the field that was conducted at the 2021 Canadian Association for Theatre Research (CATR) conference. Prompted by the results of a survey conducted by CATR’s Emerging Scholars Task Force, the round table addresses the difficult job prospects that emerging scholars in theatre and performance studies face, and opportunities that lie beyond the field and the academy. The roun…
Democratic Multiplicity: Perceiving, Enacting, and Integrating Democratic Diversity
This edited volume argues that democracy is broader and more diverse than the dominant state-centered, modern representative democracies, to which other modes of democracy are either presumed subordinate or ignored. The contributors seek to overcome the standard opposition of democracy from below (participatory) and democracy from above (representative). Rather, they argue that through differently situated participatory and representative practic…
Ambivalences of Hospitality
This essay addresses the ambivalences, limits, and possibilities of an ethics of hospitality. It argues for three claims. First, there is a significant disjuncture between an ethics of hospitality and a politics of hospitality expressed as cosmopolitan right. Second, a cosmopolitan right of universal hospitality does not, and cannot, fully capture our obligations to refugees. Third, there is a significant role of an ethics of hospitality in a for…
Rhetorics of Degeneration: Nietzsche, Lombroso, and Napoleon
In this commentary on Ken Gemes's “The Biology of Evil,” I endorse the general reading of Nietzsche's philosophical project proposed by Gemes while contesting his account of Nietzsche's rhetorical engagement with degeneration theory. In particular, I show that Nietzsche is mobilizing a rhetoric of degeneration that invokes, and partially subverts, the picture of degeneration proposed by Caesare Lombroso in which (contra Gemes's adoption of Nordau…

The Political Philosophy of Refuge
Debates concerning who is entitled to refugee status and what is owed to persons with that status have proliferated in recent years. Since Andrew Shacknove’s radical challenge to the 1951 Refugee Convention specification of refugeehood, posed against the background of the regional agreements expressed in the Organization of African Unity’s 1969 Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa and the 1984 Cartagena Declarat…
The Democratic Production of Political Cohesion: Partisanship, Institutional Design and Life Form
Politics Recovered: Realist Thought in Theory and Practice
Politics Recovered brings together prominent scholars to develop the idea of what it might mean to theorize politics “realistically.” By exploring the nature, distinctiveness, and prospects of realist thought, it shows how political theory can provide meaningful and compelling answers to the fundamental questions of political life.
The Prior Question: What Do We Need State Citizenship for?
In his kick-off contribution, Costica Dumbrava offers a threefold critique of ius sanguinis as a norm of citizenship acquisition. I share the scepticism expressed by various contributors to this Forum. However rather than address Dumbrava’s critique head on, I suggest that the kind of critique of ius sanguinis that he offers gets things moving askew from the start. When asking what citizenship rules we ought to endorse or reject, we ought to begi…
Trading Citizenship, Human Capital and the European Union
The state as a self-determining agent has a clear and well-established interest in structuring ‘access to citizenship’ in ways that support its goals, whether these goals concern economic development, health and social welfare, cultural standing or sporting glory. The legitimacy of the ways in which it pursues these goals is however another question. Practices that support the emergence of transnational class and status stratification in which mo…
Realism in Ethics and Politics: Bernard Williams, Political Theory, and the Critique of Morality
Nietzsche and the Frankfurt School
Nietzsche’s reception by, and influence on, the Frankfurt School is significant and complex. This chapter focuses narrowly on the very distinct receptions of Nietzsche’s philosophy in the work of Adorno and of Habermas. It does so on the grounds that the contrasting relationships of the early and later Frankfurt School to Nietzsche also reveal a central tension within the Frankfurt School between two distinct approaches to the tasks of Critical T…
Sortition, Rotation, and Mandate: Conditions for Political Equality and Deliberative Reasoning
The proposal to create a chamber selected by sortition would extend this democratic procedure into the legislative branch of government. However, there are good reasons to believe that, as currently conceived by John Gastil and Erik Olin Wright, the proposal will fail to realize sufficiently two fundamental democratic goods, namely, political equality and deliberative reasoning. It is argued through analysis of its historic and contemporary appli…

The Nietzschean Mind
"Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest thinkers of the nineteenth century. As a German philosopher and cultural critic his work has had and continues to have a significant influence on Western philosophy and modern intellectual history. The Nietzschean Mind seeks to provide a comprehensive survey of his work, not only placing it in its historical context but also exploring its contemporary significance. Com…

The UK's In-Out Referendum: EU Foreign and Defence Policy Reform
The EU's attempts at conflict resolution have left much to be desired. In the Ukraine, the Baltic States, Turkey and much of the Middle East, there is a lack of coherent policy. This book argues that the renegotiations around the UK's referendum vote represent an opportunity to enact wide-scale reform, not least to ensure that the nations of an increasingly politically integrated Eurozone do not come to dominate the Foreign and Security policy of…
Survey Article: Deliberation, Democracy, and the Systemic Turn
Deliberative democracy as a theoretical enterprise has gone through a series of phases or 'turns'. 3 The most recent manifestation of this dynamic is the idea of the 'deliberative system', of which a variety of formulations have been proposed. An important initial attempt to offer a reflective synthesis of work on deliberative systems is the recent essay, 'A systemic approach to deliberative democracy

Sociology after Postmodernism
Postmodernism is frequently described as dealing a death-blow to sociology. This book, however, argues that it is a mistake to conceive postmodernism in terms of a fatal attack upon what sociologists do. The contributors locate the identity of sociology `after' postmodernism as a contested site which opens up the possibility of re-imagining the enterprise of sociology. They show how this re-imagination might be conducted and trace some of the key…
Substantive Issues in the Definition of “Localities”: Evidence from Sub–Group Local Labour Market Areas in the West Midlands
COOMBES M. G., GREEN A. E. and OWEN D. W. (1988) Substantive issues in the definition of “localities”: evidence from sub-group local labour market areas in the West Midlands, Reg. Studies 22, 303–318. Local Labour Market Areas (LLMAs) are now widely accepted as the most appropriate areal units for analyses of spatial patterns of employment and unemployment. The most commonly used set of LLMAs in Britain are the Travel-To-Work Areas (TTWAs) of the…
Genealogy as examplary critique: Reflections on Foucault and the imagination of the political
This paper suggests that genealogy (as it is elaborated and practised in the work of Foucault) is an exemplary form of critique. The stakes of this argument are established in the course of on initial response to critics of genealogy such as Habermas and Fraser (who claim that it involves a performative contradiction) through the distinguishing of legislative and exemplary forms or critique. The essay then goes on to show how Foucault's central c…

Maturity and Modernity: Nietzsche, Weber, Foucault and the Ambivalence of Reason
Maturity and Modernity is the first book to analyze Nietzsche, Weber and Foucault as a tradition of theorising and to chart the development of genealogy as a mode of critique. It provides clear accounts of the main ideas of Nietzsche, Weber and Foucault (as well as a useful Glossary) and illustrates the relations between these thinkers at methodological, substantive and politcal levels
Soul-Blindness, Police Orders and Black Lives Matter: Wittgenstein, Cavell, and Rancière
What does it mean to see someone as human, as a member of humankind? What kind of call for justice is it to demand that a group be seen as human beings? This article explores a fundamental kind of injustice: one of perception and how we respond to our perceptions. Drawing on Cavell, Wittgenstein and Rancière, we elucidate "soul blindness" as a distinct and basic form of injustice. Rancière's police orders and Cavell's soul blindness are mutually …
Re-orienting International Relations: On Pragmatism, Pluralism and Practical Reasoning
This essay presents the case for a re-orientation of International Relations (IR) in terms of the pragmatist ethos sketched in the work of John Dewey. It argues that contemporary IR theory is characterised by the threat of theoreticism and that this danger is heightened by the confusion between pictures and theories. The essay goes on to indicate how a pragmatist orientation to issues of government in terms of a processual ethic could provide a f…

These features pose a labour supply challenge for rural areas. However, many rural areas are experiencing in-migration (from other parts of…
Labour market experience and occupational change amongst ethnic groups in Great Britain
This article uses Labour Force Survey data to examine the changing labour market experience of ethnic groups in Britain during the 1980s. The article places these changes in the context of the changing structure of the British economy, and of the regions within Britain. It contrasts the labour market experience of ethnic minorities within six broad regions. The article finds that the established pattern of ethnic group advantage and disadvantage …

The individual components of the accounts are estimated f…
Autonomy and 'inner distance: A trace of Nietzsche in Weber
The problem I raise here is not what ought to succeed mankind in the sequence of species (- the human being is an end -): but what type of human being one ought to breed, ought to will, as more valuable, more worthy of life, more certain of the future. (Friedrich Nietzsche 1 ) The question which leads us beyond the grave of our own generation is not 'how will human beings feel in the future', but 'how will they be' ... We do not want to train up …

Cultural Diversity and the Conversation of Justice: Reading Cavell on Political Voice and the Expression of Consent
In a recent AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL EXERCISE, Stanley cavell remarks that if he had been required by the publisher give a one-clause sense of The Claim of Reason's reason for existing, it might have been to help bring the human voice back into This comment leads one ask in what sense Cavell thinks that the human voice had gone missing from philosophy? And, further, ask what the important of this (attempted) act of returning the human voice philosophy is…

Attention is drawn to the uniquely geographical character of the data contained on the disc--and the fact that information for t…

The City Parochial Charities: The “Dead Hand” in Late Victorian London
In the familiar line “Time makes ancient good uncouth”, James Russell Lowell enunciated what can almost stand as a natural law of endowed charities. Over the decades, as social values change and new institutional arrangements develop, obsolescence becomes the inevitable destiny of masses of these benefactions in perpetuity, especially those with specific and rigid trusts. And broadly speaking, the more ancient the good, the more uncouth it will s…
