  • Jewish Bible Translations

    Open Access•Philip A Noss•ARTICLE•International Bulletin of Mission…•2023

Jewish Bible Translations, by the renowned Jewish scholar Leonard Greenspoon, is a classic study of the translation of the Bible. The first of its kind, it is an informative and instructive model for Bible translation studies. It describes the Bible’s translations by a people who were nationless over three millennia. • Gbaya Riddles in Changing Times

    Philip A Noss•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2006•Cited by: 1

Gbaya Riddles in Changing Times Philip A. Noss Abstract While the ridde constitutes a game that challenges the intellectual adroitness of the riddler's peers, it is a metaphor that confronts the apparently impossible with what is. If Harold Scheub is correct in affirming in his book The Poem in the Story (Madison: U of Wisconsin P, 2002) that the riddle is “a model for all oral art,” then the dynamics of riddle change are significant for the enti…

    Karl Erik Rosengren, Joel S Canby et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1976•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The author uses the technique of substruction in order to explicate the conceptualizations about magic, science, and religion which, over more than 50 years, have been brought forward by anthropologists like Malinowski, Nadel, and Goody. The outcome is several typologies which encompass also the important linguistic notion of performative acts originated by J. L. Austin. By means of these typologies it is possible to relate to each other in a log…

It was performed at the beginning of the rainy season for boys six to eight years of age. This dance was a celebration of the creation of the social order. The author describes the rites and cites a number of the songs used with them

  • The Danger of Courtesy

    Open Access•Philip A Noss•ARTICLE•Practical Anthropology•1970

The rules of behavior which make social life possible are very important; but they differ radically from society to society. The foreigner cannot ignore the code of the people among whom he is living because this would cause offense; nor can he give up his own code and totally adopt the other, because people will be suspicious of one who abandons his own code. Rather, he should learn and apply the basic tenets of the host society in appropriate s…
