  • The Entangled Nature of Work

    Open Access•Thomas Fleischman•ARTICLE•International Labor and…•2024•References: 4

A survey of recent works of labor and environment reveal the centrality of hybridity to analyses of human and nonhuman natures. These are most apparent in analyses of labor, technology, and nature. While ways of knowing nature amongst the powerful have been oriented toward the ever-greater domination of workers and nonhuman nature, interspecies entanglements and solidarity erupt through the marginal, overlooked spaces. Taken together, the books i…

  • Saving Nature under Socialism

    Thomas Fleischman•ARTICLE•Agricultural History•2023

In memories of the Cold War, the German Democratic Republic's (GDR) horrific environmental record casts a long shadow. According to popular memory, the East German regime cared little for the environment and its people, poisoning the water, air, and land in pursuit of “real, existing socialism.” Thirty years after the collapse, its reputation as an “ecocidal” regime endures. This story is at best incomplete and at worst misleading. Much of it is …

  • A plague of wild boars”

    Open Access•Thomas Fleischman•ARTICLE•Antipode•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 16

This paper looks at an ungulate irruption of wild boars that occurred in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the 1970s and 1980s. It argues that this hybrid phenomenon resulted from the confluence of three historically specific, intertwined factors in late 20th century Europe: first, East Germany's embrace of development ideology to remake their farms and forests; second, the simultaneous introduction of a specifically East German conservatio…

  • The People’s Own Landscape

    Thomas Fleischman•ARTICLE•German History•2016

Over its short history, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) racked up a horrific environmental record. Factory emissions produced acid rain, accelerating ‘forest death’ across central Europe. Industrialized collective farms (LPGs) dumped fertilizers into East Germany’s waterways, contaminating over 80% of them. And as the trees and lakes of the GDR declined, so too did the health of East Germans. Based on this record alone, it would appear that …
