Unearthing a hidden curriculum of gendered museum languages through critical feminist visual discourse analysis
This article explores the hidden gendered curriculum concealed in the texts, exhibitions and other structural devices of museums and what they teach visitors to see and think. Grounded in conceptualisations of culture, representation, and language, past feminist studies of museums and applying feminist visual discourse analysis (FVDA) we found hiding in plain sight in public museums in Canada and England a diversity of 'languages' that subversive…

Reimagining Multiliteracies for Science and Mathematics Teacher Candidates during the Pandemic
The researchers used a duo-ethnographic approach to examine mathematics and science teacher-candidates (TCs) experiences with a Multiliteracies Across the Curriculum course during the pandemic and how the shift to online delivery impacted their attitudes. Through one researcher’s course reflections and students’ anonymous course survey comments in 2020, the research revealed that some TCs lack of exposure to literacy-based teaching impacted their…
YouTube for Transcribing and Google Drive for Collaborative Coding: Cost-Effective Tools for Collecting and Analyzing Interview Data
Cloud-based tools are increasingly used in research processes. In this paper, we illustrate the practice of one research team making use of multiple cloud-based applications in preparing, analyzing, and sharing research data, as well as in collaborative writing and display of results. Important research ethics considerations are also explored as a foundation for this practice. We believe that our detailed description of the steps involved can be …
Educating Epistemic Justice and Resistance Through the Feminist Museum Hack: Looking and Acting with Another Eye
Museums do not simply reflect the world; they shape and mobilise our seeing and thus knowing of the world. As highly trusted, authoritative institutions, museums educate a common sense of historical, social, aesthetic and cultural value. Despite efforts to change, feminist cultural theorists remind us that women in all their diversity continue to be excluded or problematically imagined in stereotypical ways in museum representations and discourse…
Link2Practice: A Model of Ongoing Teacher and Teacher Candidate Professional Learning
A common complaint about teacher education programs is that it follows a linear model—where theory and teaching skills are learned at the university and then applied in practicum experiences—that is inadequate and does not accurately represent teacher candidates’(TC) experiences (Brouwer & Korthagen, 2005; Korthagen, Loughran & Russell, 2006). Indeed, teacher education programs have long been faced with the challenge of a “theory/practice divide”…
Performing gender in a Barbie Expo: White passivity, exotic otherness, and tradition in a fashionista bow

New BC Curriculum and Communicating Student Learning in an Age of Assessment for Learning
The purpose of this paper is to provide an in-depth analysis and review of effective and meaningful practices in reporting and communicating student learning in K-12 within the framework of assessment for learning. The timeliness of this topic is derived from the launch of the new curriculum in British Columbia (B.C.), which promotes innovations in both assessment and reporting. To accomplish this goal, research in assessment, grading and reporti…

Contemporary museums as pedagogic contact zones: Potentials of critical cultural adult education
In this article, we position museums as ‘pedagogic contact zones’, sites fraught with both problems and potential. Using five stories drawn from our work and engagement with public museums over the past five years in Canada, England and Scotland, we illustrate how contemporary practices of critical cultural pedagogy work to construct, deconstruct, reconstruct, disrupt, dislocate, interrogate and decolonise. We argue that the critical and creative…
Gendered Literacy Experiences: The Effects of Expectation and Opportunity for Boys' and Girls' Learning
The research reported in this article intends to contribute to an understanding of how out-of-school literacies can influence the present and future learning of adolescents. Evidence suggests that students, boys particularly, are becoming literate in many ways through out-of-school activities (e.g., video games, Internet browsing, chatrooms), but girls are not engaging in these activities or using them in the same ways. Although girls appear more…
Mentoring, not Monitoring: Mediating a Whole-School Model in Supervising Preservice Teachers
This article offers a case study of a whole-school model for supervising preservice teachers that is related to the principles of professional development schools (Holmes Group, 1990) and Zeichner's (1992) notions of rethinking student teachers' practicum experience. The article draws on constructivist notions of learning to teach; in particular, reference is made to Vygotsky's (1978) sense of mediating a stimulus where in a social-cultural conte…
