Monsters, Inc: Curing Ethical Blindness in an Era of Test‐Based Accountability
Discussions about literacy assessment can often be polarizing for teachers, school administrators, and other stakeholders. Given the diverse and often charged perspectives on assessment within both the profession and the broader public discourse, it can be difficult to engage in productive dialogue about the role that literacy assessment plays in promoting or inhibiting effective models of literacy education. This article provides perspectives, q…
(Re-) Mapping the System: Toward Dialogue-Driven Transformation in the Teaching and Assessment of Writing Authors
Over three days, 180 junior and senior high school English teachers, postsecondary (university and college) writing instructors, workplace (corporate and small business) writing instructors, and government officials who are responsible for portfolios related to workforce training and literacy met to understand from a broad systems-level perspective how writing development was being supported and assessed in Alberta Canada. Conversations were stru…
Kinship Matters
by Ebtehaj, Fatemeh, Lindley, Bridget and Richards, Martin ( eds ) Oxford : Hart , 2006 ISBN 9781841136974 , 311 pp , £35 (pb ) This book, a collection of 15 articles and the fifth in a series by Cambridge University's Socio-Legal Group, is based on a three-day workshop held in Cambridge in 2005. It is a refreshing change to read a book which both in title and content places kin at the centre of UK social policy discussions and developments. It p…
Young people leaving care: Implementing the children (Leaving Care) Act 2000
This article presents findings from a large empirical research study which examines the ways in which the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 is being implemented. The evidence presented points to a complex picture of ‘slower running’ and ‘faster running’ leaving care services, modest achievements, ongoing problems, and mixed outcomes. The author argues that compared with previous studies, the increased number of young people leaving care entering p…
Kinship care for children in the UK: Messages from research, lessons for policy and practice1
Following innovative research into kinship care by the author, two books, and three conference presentations, including key-notes, this article has helped to put kinship care towards the top of the child welfare agenda, both nationally and elsewhere in Europe. On the basis of the research and analysis that informed this one article, the author has been invited to speak at further national, international research and training events. This work has…
Kinship Care: Supporting Children in Placements with Extended Family and Friends
There is little written about children living in kinship care placements, either generally about the role and work of social services in supporting such placements or specifically about kinship care from carers' and users' perspectives. For a child in need who can no longer live with their birth parents(s), being supported by social services to live with a member of her or his extended family can be another appropriate placement option. Given tha…
Pulling Your Hair Out: Crises of Standardization in Communal Writing Assessment
Explores how writing instructors at “City University” grappled with crises of standardization in evaluation of students’ portfolios. Details the two most severe experiences in multiple breakdowns in the project of standardization: crises of textual representation and crises of evaluative subjectivity. Examines conflicting interpretations (psychometric and hermeneutic) of City University’s crises
Young people leaving care: Moving towards ‘joined up’ solutions
This paper presents some of the findings of a national study of 46 leaving care projects working with 3308 young people leaving care, and an analysis of national post Children Act 1989 initiatives. It presents key implications for local and national policy and practice from that study and, in so doing, records the considerable achievements of, but also the problems faced by, these projects. It is argued that despite a welcome, new commitment by g…
Young people leaving care: Moving towards ‘joined up’ solutions
Improving the Health of Children and Young People Leaving Care
In this article Bob Broad identifies the health of care leavers as an emerging and significant issue in child care and, based on empirical findings, argues that improvements to their health is needed as a matter of some urgency. The article summarises recent health literature in the leaving care and looked after fields leading to the presentation of the main findings of a research project about the health needs of young people leaving care. The a…
Users' Rights and the Probation Service: Some Opportunities and Obstacles
This article examines the opportunities and obstacles facing the possible extension of legal and social rights for users of probation services. It is argued that the notion of users' rights in the community punishment context promotes a view of users as citizens with responsibilities rather than feckless offenders. It is further argued that extended user rights should act as a check against forms of new managerialism which now permeate the probat…
