This volume introduces the statistical, methodological, and conceptual aspects of mediation analysis. Applications from health, social, and developmental psychology, sociology, communication, exercise science, and epidemiology are emphasized throughout. Single-mediator, multilevel, and longitudinal models are reviewed. The author's goal is to help the reader apply mediation analysis to their own data and understand its limitations. Each chapter f…

Power Analysis for Complex Mediational Designs Using Monte Carlo Methods
Applied researchers often include mediation effects in applications of advanced methods such as latent variable models and linear growth curve models. Guidance on how to estimate statistical power to detect mediation for these models has not yet been addressed in the literature. We describe a general framework for power analyses for complex mediational models. The approach is based on the well known technique of generating a large number of sampl…
Long-term Effects of a Worksite Health Promotion Program for Firefighters

Adolescents are sexual beings, and many are sexually active. They are very often able to develop the knowledge and skills required to protect their sexual health, and to take the action required for doing so. Unfortunately, many experience barriers to accessing information through school-based sexual health education. Preadolescent Girls and the Presentation of Self
The purpose of this study was to examine how five preadolescent girls constructed and presented their social identities and the perceived influence of the media in this process. A series of individual and focus group interviews were held with five 9- and 10-year-old girls. Goffman's (1959) interactionist perspective of the theatrical performance provided the framework for the inquiry. The participants in the study offered testimonials that clearl…

Condom skills education and sexually transmitted disease reinfection
A condom skills educational program emphasizing how to use a condom was presented to groups of patients waiting to be seen in a public health sexually transmitted disease clinic. Compared to controls, patients exposed to the intervention were approximately half as likely to return within the subsequent 12 months with a new sexually transmitted disease. Other predictors of reinfection included previous infection and age less than 25
