  • Edward Dicey, Mass Politics, and International Affairs

    Philip Towle•ARTICLE•Diplomacy and Statecraft•2014

The journalist, Edward Dicey, made an original contribution to the mid-nineteenth century debate on the growing involvement of the mass of people in political affairs. He argued that political education initially encouraged nationalism, causing the series of wars on which he reported. Beginning as an enthusiast for Camillo Cavour, the Piedmontese statesman, and the unification of Italy, Dicey became increasingly aware of the destructive impact of…

  • Forced disarmament in the 1920s and after

    Philip Towle•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Studies•2006•References: 3

The forced disarmament of Germany and its allies contributed to the widespread revulsion against the 1919 peace treaties. By the mid 1920s British politicians and diplomats, such as Austen Chamberlain and Viscount d'Abernon, responded by advocating a political settlement with Germany and thus abandoning or weakening the disarmament measures. In contrast, the disarmament inspectors, led by General Morgan, believed in standing by the letter of the …

  • September 2001 and the media

    Philip Towle•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2003

The attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 went beyond the culminating point of victory, pushed the US into declaring war on its enemies, and immediately united sections of the elite media across the world in horrified denunciation of the terrorists. The various national media usually react very differently to major international events, interpreting them according to their national interests and dispositions. However, u…

  • Japanese Prisoners of War

Robert C Doyle, Philip Towle et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Military History•2001

During World War II the Japanese were stereotyped in the European imagination as fanatical, cruel, almost inhuman - an image reflected in most books and films about prisoner of war in the Far East. While the Japanese cetainly treated those they captured badly, behaving far worse to Chinese and native captives than to Europeans, the conventional view of the Japanese is unhistorical and simplistic. It fails to recognize that hte Japanese were actin…
