  • The hydrologic classification of dilute lakes

    Open Access•John E Martin•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2022•References: 50

Dilute lakes, herein defined as having an electrical conductivity ≤25 μS cm −1 , are considered valuable culturally, as water and recreational resources; biologically, as unique ecosystems; and scientifically, as sentinels of climate change. However, research and interest has been spread over many disciplines focusing on various issues, making hydrologic comparisons somewhat difficult. Here, 15 dilute lakes are subdivided into lake subtypes based…

  • Reflections on the history of the Royal Society Te Apārangi

    Open Access•John E Martin•ARTICLE•Kōtuitui New Zealand Journal of…•2017•References: 2

This paper uses the author’s own recently published history of the Royal Society Te Apārangi (the Royal Society) to reflect on the history of the organisation from a social sciences perspective. The Royal Society’s organisational ‘reinvention’ of itself has reflected the changing place of science and other forms of knowledge in New Zealand. The shift from the nineteenth‐century amateur pursuit of knowledge to science as a specialised professional…

  • Hydrologic response of a small forested swamp complex, Seymour Valley, British Columbia

    Open Access•John E Martin•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 32

Wetlands are common in Coastal Western Hemlock forests yet the hydrologic processes that generate runoff from small swamps are not completely understood. Direct field observations, hydrologic, and electrical conductivity data were collected from a gently sloping forested swamp complex from July to November 2009. Swamps occupied depressions between raised mounds (0.1 to 3 m high) and were connected by an ephemeral creek. Runoff was controlled by a…

  • Political Participation and Electoral Change in Nineteenth-Century New Zealand

    Open Access•John E Martin•ARTICLE•Political Science•2005•Cited by: 3

This article suggests that it is important to look at the early decades of elections in New Zealand's political history, a time when many believe that politics was undemocratic and political participation was low. In order to evaluate this issue statistics on the numbers voting and electorates contested have been generated by extensive newspaper research for the general elections in the period 1853 to 1876, on which the Re is little information. …

  • English Models and Antipodean Conditions

    Open Access•John E Martins, John E Martin•ARTICLE•Labour History•1997

  • Control in the Shearing Shed

Open Access•John Martins, John Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Labour History•1992

The impact of the introduction of machine shearing on the relationship between pastoralist and shearer has been documented in recent Australian literature.1 This paper explores similar developments in New Zealand and places machine shearing in the wider context of workplace relations in shearing sheds in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with a focus on shearing agreements and later, the emergence of Arbitration Court awards and a con…
