  • US Perspectives on China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Central Asia and the South Caucasus

    Open Access•S FREDERICK STARR•ARTICLE•International Studies•2019•Cited by: 2

To date, the US response to the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Central Asia and the Caucasus has been calm, if not tacitly supportive. Two main reasons for this are: (a) the reopening of age-old east–west trade corridors as one of the most important legacies of the collapse of the USSR and (b) it views the engagement of both China and Europe in east–west trade across Central Asia as furthering the Central Asians’ own ability to achieve…

Absorbed by the Qing in the 1880s and reconquered by Mao in 1949, this Turkic-Muslim region of China's remote northwest borders on formerly Soviet Central Asia, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Mongolia, and Tibet, Will Xinjiang participate in twenty-first century ascendancy, or will nascent Islamic radicalism in Xinjiang expand the orbit of instability in …

DESPITE near-constant warnings of imminent chaos, Afghanistan has come a long way since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001. Security has improved markedly, and the economy has stabilized. A national assembly has ratified an impressive constitution, and pres idential elections were held. If progress continues, the reconstruction of Afghanistan will mark a significant victory in the war on terrorism. If it flags, the recent gains will start to er…

  • Foreign Languages on the Campus

    Open Access•S FREDERICK STARR•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1994•References: 4

The 1980s witnessed substantial increases in enrollments in foreign language courses at American universities. Adjusted to take account of various factors, however, these increases are far from impressive and leave universities more monolingual than in the 1960s. Federal options for improving this are limited, but state and campus-based initiatives hold much promise. Generally, the emphasis should be on developing mastery by reducing attrition ra…

    Open Access•Frederick Starr, S FREDERICK STARR•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•1977•Cited by: 2
