  • Are healthcare organizations healthy? Quality of life in healthcare work in Northern and Southern Europe

Open Access•Margareta Back-Wiklund, Maria Das Dores Horta Guerreiro et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2017

From a gender perspective, this article analyses the concept of “healthy organization” through the study of the “dual agenda” of healthcare organizations. Based in the EU funded project “Quality of Life in a Changing Europe”, which priviledged a multi-method approach, we analyse data from an extensive survey applied in eight European countries (Germany, Bulgaria, Finland, The Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal, United Kingdom and Sweden) and present …

  • The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same

Stefan Szüc, STEFAN SZÜCS et al.•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 9

This article examines the development of the main characteristics of the Swedish local political–administrative elite, by analysing repeated surveys, performed in 1985, 1991, 1999 and 2005, of all important leaders in a representative sample of 20 towns and cities. Despite the great changes that have occurred at the local government level, the local government elite retains a surprisingly high degree of homogeneity and stability over time. Althou…

  • Local Elites, Political Capital and Democratic Development

Open Access•Stefan SzÃ1⁄4cx, Lars Strömberg et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Local Elites, Political Capital…•2006

This book helps to understand in which ways local governing elites are important for the success or failure of national democratic development. Although we know a great deal about the general importance of civil society and social capital for the development of sustainable democracy, we still know little about what specific local governing qualities or political capital that interact with democratic development. The collected data covers time ser…

  • The Public/Private Cleavage in a Welfare State

Open Access•Lois Recascino Wise, Stefan Szüc et al.•ARTICLE•Governance•1996•Cited by: 14•References: 43

This study contributes to the growing literature on differences in attitudes between public and private sector employees, particularly with respect to their receptivity or resistance to public management reforms. We begin by asking the question: to what degree does perceived self‐interest play a role in accounting for attitudes toward public management reforms such as downsizing, privatization, and public spending? Using attitudinal data from Swe…

  • Democratization and the Reorganization of the Welfare State

    Open Access•Stefan Szüc, STEFAN SZÜCS•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The democratization of Eastern Europe has engaged a debate about the relationship between the state and civil society. Efforts to create an independent civil society have raised questions about state-dominated political change in Western democracies as well. Since the 1980s, the European social welfare state has been challenged by downsizing, decentralization, and privatization of government services. Recent research in Europe shows, however, a s…
