Knowledge without Borders
This article examines the dynamics of epistemic communities across the Eastern Indian Ocean, whose raison d’être is the cultivation and communication of Islamic scholarship. This body of Islamic knowledge, the formal basis for this epistemic community, is represented in a set of discourses that are the communicative medium transacted among its members. This transaction creates the shared discursive space that situates their relationships over the…
Reconceptualizing Secularization and Secularism
This article aims to define a new way of understanding the secularization process, especially in non-Western societies. It conceptualizes secularization as a value inversion process, in which the substantive values that underpin social practices, laws, or institutions are displaced by those that serve instrumental ends. The article defines the historical mechanisms by which value inversion takes place and demonstrates the value of the theory in t…
Modalities of Argumentation, Scriptural Reasoning, and the Structural Characteristics of Early Islamic Theological Discourse
This examination of three early Islamic theological texts will show that the discursive practices within their respective genera of writing in its nascent stages were scripturally hermeneutical in character. Primary focus was on arguing for the proper understanding of Quranic statements rather than offering extensive arguments based on purely rational grounds. Formal analysis of early writings on divine determinism such as we have selected sugges…
The Challenge of Religious Governance in the Modern Nation-State
This article explores the tensions of Islamic governance in contemporary Iran by examining the convergence of Islamic law with modern practices of governance. One key contention with contemporary statehood this political project is trying to reconcile is how to re-embed religious norms in the secularized political sphere. I assert that the political and legal practices for re-embedding these norms indicate an epistemic shift in the modes of legit…
Outlines of a Global Power-Field (GPF) Theory (Part 1)
This essay takes modern world-system theory and maps it into a political-economic field of power. This re-modeling of the theory better illustrates the diffuseness and the spatiality of the operations of global forces; thus, helping us have a greater appreciation of the durability and scope of Western economic and political hegemony across the world. Our exposition also tracks the structural transformation undergone by the Global Power-Field (GPF…
Contending with Capitalism
Neoliberal economic theorists posit that the economic sphere is to be differentiated from the social world and governed by its own rationality that is distinct from religious, ethical, social, or political considerations. My article explores how the issuance of fatwas in the contemporary Muslim world discursively compete with neoliberal capitalist ideology by embedding religious ethics in economic discourse. First, I contextualize this analysis w…

Fatwa, Discursivity, and the Art of Ethical Embedding
This paper theorizes the role of iftāʾ, the process of producing fatwas (Islamic legal opinions), on the formation of Muslim societies. I argue in this paper that iftāʾ is an ethical embedding mechanism that historically carried out this function through a set of discursive and nondiscursive relations. “Ethical embedding” signifies the situating of the various spheres of the social world into an ethical domain. As for iftāʾs discursive relations,…
