  • Possible influence of age on the expression of the heterozygous cerumen phenotype

    Open Access•Nicholas L Petrakis, Stephen L Wiesenfeld et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The relationship of cerumen (earwax) phenotype and age was examined in 2,618 women. An increasing proportion of white women with dry or unclassifiable cerumen was found with advancing age, ranging from 2.0% in women under 30 years to 13.3% in women 70 years and older. No statistically significant change with age was found in other racial groups. It is suggested that the increase of dry or unclassifiable cerumen in white women represents a change …

  • Genetic structure and heterozygosity in the kuru region, Eastern Highlands of New Guinea

    Open Access•Stephen L Wiesenfeld, D Carleton Gajdusek•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1976•Cited by: 3•References: 17

Genetic structure of 20 of the 37 linguistic groups in the Eastern Highlands of New Guinea including the kuru region is analyzed using information on blood groups and serum protein polymorphisms. The average individual is heterozygous at 28.6% of loci and the average number of alleles per locus is 1.234. Coefficients of kinship for linguistic groups range from 0.005 for the sweet potato cultivating North Fore to 0.075 for the isolated Pawaians wh…
