Ancient Peoples of the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau
Written to appeal to professional archaeologists, students, and the interested public alike, this book is a long overdue introduction to the ancient peoples of the Great Basin and northern Colorado Plateau. Through detailed syntheses, the reader is drawn into the story of the habitation of the Great Basin from the entry of the first Native Americans through the arrival of Europeans. Ancient Peoples is a major contribution to Great Basin archaeolo…

The Fremont Complex
Tur Imdai Rockshelter
Excavation of a rockshelter in southern Jordan yielded a record of habitation by pastoralists beginning about A.C. 1650 and continuing to the present. Ethnography and oral history associate the site with the Bedul Bedouin of Petra over the past century. The 3.6 m deep deposits yielded seven radiocarbon dates, microbotanical remains, goat and sheep bones, and a variety of artifacts. There was a shift in use of the shelter in the late 17th century …

Site Structure of the Orbit Inn
One goal of ethnoarchaeology is to strengthen archaeological inferences about the past. A fifteenth-century hunter-gatherer, open site in Utah is used to examine ethnoarchaeological contributions toward determining the use of space, duration of occupation, assemblage composition, and site function. Comparisons between macrorefuse and microrefuse patterning suggest that (1) the distribution of macrorefuse can help identify locations of ephemeral s…
Behavioral Ecology and Hunter-Gatherer Foraging: An example from the Great Basin
Anthropological Applications of Optimal Foraging Theory
Recent applications of models of optimal foraging behavior to human foraging economies are summarized and evaluated. These models predict patterns of prey choice, habitat use, time allocation, settlement pattern, and foraging group size that will maximize some objective currency (such as the net rate of energy capture while foraging) under the constraints of resource characteristics and forager capabilities pertaining to a particular situation. I…
