Classroom Composition Policy for Elementary Students Labeled English Learner
I describe how a policy aimed at increasing achievement among students labeled EL initially went awry—and how a researcher-district partnership persevered to rectify it. The policy, which called for 100% EL classrooms, produced unintended consequences. Critical discussion of empirical evidence and district-solicited input from multiple constituencies brought to light sociocultural, sociopolitical, and socioeconomic factors. This shift enabled pol…
Elementary English Learner Classroom Composition and Academic Achievement
Using mixed methods, we investigated (a) the association of the extent of English learner (EL) classroom-level segregation (proportion EL) and number of EL English proficiency levels with elementary EL academic achievement, using 2 years of administrative data, and (b) school staff–reported opportunity to learn–related advantages and disadvantages in segregated versus integrated compositions, using 3 years of interviews. Findings were corroborati…
Making English Learner Reclassification to Fluent English Proficient Attainable or Elusive
Employing longitudinal, multisite comparative mixed-methods, we describe patterns of reclassifying and not reclassifying eligible English learner (EL) students to fluent English proficient, and we identify factors impeding and facilitating reclassification. Analyses of administrative data for 7 cohorts of students over 3 years in one district and 2 years in another revealed a considerable number of students meeting all criteria, and a nonoverlapp…
English Learner Curricular Streams in Four Middle Schools
Little is known about the curricular experiences schools provide English learner students (ELs) to meet the dual goals of attaining English language proficiency (ELP) and grade-level achievement. I introduce the concept of Curricular Streams to provide a more nuanced comparative analysis of four urban middle schools, focusing on: (a) the extent to which they provided English language development (ELD) instruction and access to the core and full c…
The Courage to Grow
A successful collaboration resulted in a researcher and a teacher linking professional development with change in small-group reading instruction and student achievement
Adolescents' Self-Report of Prosocial Responses to Friends and Acquaintances
This study examined the role of three sympathy-related processes—cognitive, affective, and motivational—in adolescents' self-reports of prosocial response to distress in friends and acquaintances. Questionnaires and responses to a simulation involving four videotaped episodes in which an adolescent was victimized were used to assess sympathy-related processes and reported prosocial response in 89 high-school pupils. In general, both dispositional…
