The Environment Under Colonialism
Squatters, access to land, and production of national narratives in post-colonial Kenya
This article harnesses the concept of the “usable past” to explore multiple strategies employed by squatters in post-colonial Kenya to access land since the 1960s. It argues that the conventional land reform program inherited at independence has largely failed to solve landlessness and the squatter problem. Consequently, inspired by past promises and pledges – exemplified by the optimism of the 1950s nationalist struggle, the pre-independence pro…
Environments of Empire
Inspired by Alfred Cosby’s Ecological Imperialism (1986), historians have paid attention to the ecological impacts of European imperialism in different geographical contexts. Focus has partly been on how movement of fauna and flora transformed natural environments in imperial Europe and particularly the colonial world. Earlier historical analysis has been limited to individual empires, notably the British Empire, or individual colonies. A dearth …

The Local Native Council, Economic Imperatives, and Colonial Forest Preservation in Western Kenya, C. 1900–1950
This article examines the responses of Luyia communities to economic challenges and opportunities produced by restrictive British forestry policies in North Kavirondo District, western Kenya. Those colonial policies impeded access by peasant households to agricultural land in protected forests amid agricultural commercialization. The Local Native Council (LNC) aided this cause and launched sustained efforts to gain control of local forests and th…
Insecure borderlands, marginalization, and local perceptions of the state in Turkana, Kenya, circa 1920-2014
Africa's international borders have been sites of inter-ethnic and inter-state relations and media for material and cultural exchange. Drawing on archival materials and interviews, the article illustrates how decades of cross-border insecurity and violence from livestock raiding and tension over pasture and water resources have entrenched a consciousness within a marginalized Turkana community that critiques the role of the modern state as protec…
Colonialism and the African Environment
This chapter contends that Africa’s physical environment provided a medium for historical action as the colonial era unfolded. The nature of that history is evident in the way the environment offered colonial states and Africa a platform to express, forge, and preserve their perceptions, notions, meanings, and uses of nature. This is in no way to state that Africa’s history has been determined by its environment; rather, the environment has playe…

This wide-ranging volume presents the most complete appraisal of modern African history to date. It assembles dozens of new and established scholars to tackle the questions and subjects that define th
In Search of a Political Identity
The nationalist politics of independence that transformed East African territories from colonies to autonomous states in the early 1960s were not always peaceful, as was evidenced by the bloody Mau Mau uprising in Kenya. Only the 1964 revolution in Zanzibar (on the islands of Unguja and Pemba) that occurred in the wake of British decolonization of those islands was as bloody (Clayton, 1981: xv). The revolutionaries were largely composed of Africa…
Population, Tradition, and Environmental Control in Colonial Kenya
Drawing from accounts of colonial experience in western Kenya, Population, Tradition, and Environmental Control in Colonial Kenya examines the government's efforts to enforce certain land management programs in relation to its initiatives to revive and co-opt African "traditions" in soil conservation and land consolidation programs. Martin Shanguhyia analyzes how these programs were negotiated or contested by the local community; further, he argu…
British War-Effort Programme and the Making of the Land Degradation Narrative in Colonial Western Kenya
Most of the scholarship on colonial environmental policies in Africa focuses on how African communities were cast as culprits for environmental problems that plagued rural Africa. This interpretation overlooks ways in which colonial policies led to problems such as land degradation. This article demonstrates how exigencies of the Second World War elicited British colonial agricultural and labor policies amongst the Abaluyia community in western K…
Land and Conflict in Kenya’s Rift Valley
Conflict in Kenya's Rift Valley has been common from the early colonial period to the present. Such conflict, while frequent across Kenya, has tended to be concentrated in the Rift Valley Province. In this region, more than other parts of the country, colonial land policies created a default mode of land relations that marginalized local African communities and their modes of production by restricting their access to the most important resource i…
