  • Proximity dimensions and the emergence of collaboration

Open Access•Tobias Koopmann, Maximilian Stubbemann et al.•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2021

Creation and exchange of knowledge depends on collaboration. Recent work has suggested that the emergence of collaboration frequently relies on geographic proximity. However, being co-located tends to be associated with other dimensions of proximity, such as social ties or a shared organizational environment. To account for such factors, multiple dimensions of proximity have been proposed, including cognitive, institutional, organizational, socia…

  • The First World War and Popular Cinema

Michael Paris•BOOK•The First World War and Popular…•2019

Cinema was almost twenty years old when WWI broke out but the war introduced radical changes in the making and use of film. The First World War and Popular Cinema is a new attempt to provide a comparative analysis of how the war has been remembered in film. It looks at how national cinemas were mobilised as part of the war effort and at how, subsequently, film makers shaped the memory and legacy of the war in later years. The book takes a compara…

    Michael Paris•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•2005•Cited by: 2

During the Cold War, books and stories for young people became an important weapon in the battle for their hearts and minds. But the propaganda directed at British youth did not suddenly appear as the ‘Iron Curtain’ descended across Europe, for even before the 1917 Revolution Russia had been seen as a major threat to British interests. The Bolshevik Revolution with its expressed intent of world revolution simply intensified that danger. The anti-…

  • Legal Mobilization and the Politics of Reform

    Open Access•Michael Paris•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2001•Cited by: 11•References: 22

This article is about legal mobilization by claimant groups seeking left-liberal reform in the United States. Drawing on a growing body of work in political science and legal studies, it takes an interpretive, legal-mobilization approach to one litigation-based reform effort: school finance litigation and education reform in Kentucky. In turn, this case study provides leverage for theorizing about legal mobilization and the role of law and courts…

Lesotho held its elections on the 23rd May 1998 under the auspices of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), headed by Advocate Sekara Mafisa. The newly formed Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) unexpectedly won 79 out of 80 constituencies. Unexpectedly, because LCD was a relatively new party in Lesotho's political scene and more importantly because the emergence of this party triggered an unprecedented bitterness among political elite and…

  • The First Air Wars — North Africa and the Balkans, 1911-13

    Open Access•Michael Paris•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•1991

The most common explanation for the slow and often haphazard development of the Royal Flying Corps before and during the first world war has been that nothing was known of war in the air before 1914; that the first years of the war were the time of experimentation, of trial and error, when a theory of aerial warfare was developed, and during which the means to put that theory into practice was created. Certainly, the British had no direct experie…

  • Air Power and Imperial Defence 1880-1919

    Open Access•Michael Paris•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•1989

At the end of the first world war, the British Royal Air Force undoubtedly had the most powerful air fleet in the world and, unlike other nations, it was independent of other arms. This happy state, however, could not be expected to last for, as Malcolm Smith has pointed out, official policy stated that Britain would not be involved in a conflict for at least ten years and this belief, together with the antipathy of the older services, meant that…
