The two Levis shared this theory of fascism's irra…

  • Simon Levis Sullam. The Italian Executioners

    Open Access•Stanislao G Pugliese•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2020

Because of the manifest depravity of Adolf Hitler and National Socialism in Germany, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and his Fascist regime have benefited from a comparative analysis. The supposed innate benevolence of the Italians, combined with an alleged incapacity to bend to a totalitarian mentality, generated and fostered a postwar myth of Italiani brava gente (Italians as good people). Renzo De Felice’s Storia degli ebrei italiani sotto i…

More than twenty years ago, the Italian chemist, writer, and Holocaust survivor Primo Levi fell to his death from the stairwell of his apartment building in Turin. Within hours, a debate exploded as to whether his death was an accident or a suicide and, if the latter, how this might force us to reinterpret his legacy as a writer and survivor. Many weighed in with thoughtful and sometimes provocative commentary, but the debate over his death has s…

  • Death in Exile

    Open Access•Stanislao G Pugliese•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•1997•Cited by: 1

When the 'grand old man' of Italian socialism, Filippo Turati, died in Paris in 1932, many saw his passing as the end of an era. In truth, the great hope of Italian socialism had been dashed with the rise to power of Mussolini and the fascist regime a decade earlier; Turati's death was a symbolic postscript to that defeat. In a moving elegy, Carlo Rosselli commemorated his death and with poetic insight lamented what seemed the inexorable destiny …
