  • DP, NP, or neither? Contours of an unresolved debate

    Open Access•Andreas Blümel, Anke Holler•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2021

Glossa’s Special Collection New perspectives on the NP/DP debate brings together syntactic analyses of various phenomena of complex nominals, shedding light on the central problem of their syntactic category label. In this paper, we survey arguments and analyses offered in the Special Collection, classifying their underlying assumptions and highlighting their relevance to syntactic theory more generally

  • Commonalities and Differences in the Interpretation of Predicates of Personal Taste vs. Relational Locative Expressions

Open Access•Johanna Klages, Anke Holler et al.•ARTICLE•Open Library of Humanities•2020•References: 10

We compare two types of expressions that have been claimed to exhibit perspective-sensitivity in their semantics, predicates of personal taste like, e.g., fun , or tasty , with relational locative expressions as, e.g., to the left of , with respect to their semantic properties. While, at first blush, there are some properties shared by the two classes of expressions, the differences in semantic behaviour between them outweigh the commonalities. H…

  • Split-antecedent relative clauses and the symmetry of predicates

Open Access•Claudia Poschmann, Sascha Bargmann et al.•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2018

This paper presents the results of two experiments in German testing the acceptabilityof (non-)restrictive relative clauses (NRCs/RRCs) with split antecedents (SpAs). Accordingto Moltmann (1992), SpAs are only grammatical if their parts occur within the conjuncts ofa coordinate structure and if they have identical grammatical functions. Non-conjoined SpAsthat form the subject and the object of a transitive verb are predicted to be ungrammatical. …

  • Empirical Perspectives on Anaphora Resolution

Anke Holler, Katja Suckow•BOOK•Empirical Perspectives on…•2016

Traditionally, anaphor resolution focused on structural cues of the antecedent. Recently, the interaction between discourse factors and information structure affecting antecedent salience has been more thoroughly explored. This volume depicts selected peer-reviewed research papers that tackle issues in anaphor resolution from theoretical, empirical and experimental perspectives. These collected articles present a wide spectrum of cross-linguistic…

    Anke Holler•ARTICLE•Deutsche Sprache•2007

  • How the left-periphery of a wh-relative clause determines its syntactic and semantic relationships

    Open Access•Anke Holler•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2004

This paper discusses a certain class of German relative clauses which are characterized by a wh-expression overtly realized at the left periphery of the clause. While investigating empirical and theoretical issues regarding this class of relatives, it argues that a wh-relative clause relates syntactically to a functionally complete sentential projection and semantically to entities of various kinds that are abstracted from the matrix clause. What…
