We have studied the growth and distribution of specific healthcare occupations in the Argentine territory starting from the first national population censuses. We show the complexity underlying those optimistic interpretations of the era that associated the growth in occupation with the progressive State consolidation and the ascending socioeconomic development of Argentina in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
