On Classicism and Causal Clarity
This article explains how David Bordwell's theory of classical Hollywood cinema changed over the years, comparing his writings from 1985 with later publications such as Reinventing Hollywood . While Bordwell continued to argue that narrative was a dominant principle in classical cinema, his definition of narrative grew more expansive, placing less emphasis on the causal chain and more emphasis on narrative dynamics. Extending this insight about c…
Health conditions of older adults in complex humanitarian settings in low- and middle-income countries
BACKGROUND: Inpatient admissions of older adults in humanitarian settings in low-income and middle-income countries remain poorly documented, likely leading to gaps in the delivery of age-appropriate health services. This analysis aims to contribute to age-adapted and gender-adapted healthcare strategies in humanitarian settings. METHODS: This multicountry study includes adults who were admitted at Médecins Sans Frontières-supported inpatient dep…
Mental health of older adults in humanitarian settings in low- and middle-income countries
BACKGROUND: More complex humanitarian emergencies have a profound impact on a rapidly growing ageing population. There are few data available on the mental health conditions of older people in humanitarian settings. This study describes mental health symptoms among older adults to inform the development of age-adapted and gender-adapted mental health services in humanitarian contexts. METHODS: This multicountry study includes data from adults age…
Differences in mental health between younger and older adults in complex humanitarian settings in low-income and middle-income countries
BACKGROUND: Humanitarian emergencies increase the risk of development or exacerbation of mental health conditions. This study documents how mental health differs between younger and older adults to inform adapted mental health services in humanitarian settings. METHODS: This multicountry study includes adults who accessed Médecins Sans Frontières-supported mental health services in humanitarian settings across 20 low-income and middle-income coun…
A Public health wound
Findings suggest that children face hazardous realities; engaged in the worst form of labour, bearing important morbidity and injury burden, with vulnerabilities varying by sex and age. Despite their economic contributions to the informal sector, they remain largely invisible and exploited. This study highlights the urgent need for child rights-based research and cross-sectoral approaches that actively involve children to develop sustainable, tar…
Inequitable morbidity and injuries burden among informal sector workers in an urban area in Dhaka
In Bangladesh, 85% of the workforce is employed in the informal sector, characterised by unsafe working conditions, low wages, and a lack of social and labour protections. Evidence on the health and occupational injuries faced by informal sector workers is limited. This study assessed the health status of informal sector workers in Dhaka’s Kamrangirchar area, where Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has provided occupational health (OH) services and …
Moving at the Speed of Trust
In this paper we describe the considerations, processes and resulting insights of a trauma-informed Participatory Action Research (PAR) storytelling workshop which aimed to support healing and dignity through strengths-based writing and storytelling with and for people who have been incarcerated in British Columbia (BC), Canada. Activist scholars walked alongside Facilitators and participating Storytellers as a mechanism to offer supports and wel…
Critical failings in humanitarian response
BOX A cholera outbreak was confirmed in Kumer Refugee Camp, Amhara Region, Ethiopia, on 24 August 2023
Evaluation of a multi-component early warning system for pastoralist populations in Doolo zone, Ethiopia
Event-based surveillance can produce useful data for localized public health action for pastoralist populations. Improvements could include greater community involvement in the system design and potentially incorporating One Health approaches
Electronic Data Management for Vaccine Trials in Low Resource Settings
Background: ODK provides software and standards that are popular solutions for off-grid electronic data collection and has substantial code overlap and interoperability with a number of related software products including CommCare, Enketo, Ona, SurveyCTO, and KoBoToolbox. These tools provide open-source options for off-grid use in public health data collection, management, analysis, and reporting. During the 2018–2020 Ebola epidemic in the North …
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
An essential work of twenty-first-century cinema, Alfonso Cuarón’s 2004 film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is an elegant exemplar of contemporary cinematic trends, including serial storytelling, the rise of the fantasy genre, digital filmmaking, and collaborative authorship. With craft, wonder, and wit, the film captures the most engaging elements of the novel while artfully translating its literary point of view into cinematic terms t…
Style and Storytelling in the Hollywood Aesthetic
In this article, I offer a response to Todd Berliner’s splendid book Hollywood Aesthetic. Although the book is an innovative and well-crafted contribution to the study of Hollywood cinema, I argue that it underestimates the extent to which unity and coherence contribute to the aesthetic value of a film

Measles seroprevalence after reactive vaccination campaigns during the 2015 measles outbreak in four health zones of the former Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo
The measured seroprevalence was consistent with the events that occurred in these HZs over the past few years. Measles seroprevalence might prove a valuable source of information to help adjust the timing of future SIAs and prioritizing support to the EPI in this region as long as the VC does not reach a level high enough to efficiently prevent epidemic flare-ups
