Expressive Politics
Opportunities to govern
The state of American politics would be improved, many argue, if more moderate and qualified people served in government. We investigate what draws such individuals to run, focusing on a dimension of politics that has received scant attention within the candidate-entry literature—the ability of candidates, once elected, to exercise meaningful influence over policy. In a conjoint experiment, we find that the opportunity to wield greater authority …
Examining the Role of Quality of Institutionalized Healthcare on Maternal Mortality in the Dominican Republic
The main study objective was to determine the extent to which the quality of institutionalized healthcare, sociodemographic factors of obstetric patients, and institutional factors affect maternal mortality in the Dominican Republic. COM-Poisson distribution and the Pearson correlation coefficient were used to determine the relationship of predictor factors (i.e., hospital bed rate, vaginal birth rate, teenage mother birth rate, single mother bir…
Political Conflict over Time
We study a model of electoral competition in which politicians must decide whether to initiate the provision of some public good and, afterward, how much of the public good to supply. The model illuminates how a project's implementation affects elections and, conversely, how electoral considerations influence decisions about implementation. Under well‐defined conditions, politicians will either implement projects that they do not like or delay pr…

Switching Schools? A Closer Look at Parents' Initial Interest in and Knowledge About the Choice Provisions of No Child Left Behind
Whether public and private school choice initiatives usher in widespread en-rollment changes or whether they cater to a small niche of students critically depends on the decisions that parents make on behalf of their children. Thus far, participation rates in most programs have proved disappointing. This ar-ticle focuses on parents ’ knowledge of and interest in the choice provisions under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), for which a miniscul…
Divided Government and the Legislative Productivity of Congress, 1945-94
This paper contributes to the literature on divided government and legislative productivity. We begin by reexamining Mayhew's data on landmark enactments. We show that Mayhew's claim that divided government does not affect legislative productivity is a consequence of aggregating time series that exhibit different behavior. We then extend Mayhew's analysis by broadening the concept of significance and creating a new four-category measure that enco…
Essai sur différentes interprétations du facteur racial dans le système politique américain aujourd'hui
A test of alternative interpretations of the contemporary politics of race : a critical examination of divided by color This paper examines two interpretations of the contemporary politics of race. One emphasizes the persisting power of racism ; the other, the centrality of politics and political values. Each interpretation, to this point, has relied on surveys tailored to its distinctive concerns. We want now to see how the racism-centered and p…
