  • The Wounds of Refugeeism in Ananda Devi's Ceux du large [ Afloat ]

    Mehta Mehta•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2020

Ananda Devi's latest collection of poetry, Ceux du large [Afloat], is an attempt to humanize those who are subjected to the inhuman condition of "refugeeism," the fraught positionality of being a stateless and anonymous refugee. I discuss the ways in which Devi's poetry uncovers the wounds of refugeeism through searing verse, bitter irony, and a scathing critique of Europe's intolerance to difference. I argue that refugeeism is a biting wound tha…

  • Prescribing the Diaphragm

    Mehta Mehta•ARTICLE•American Religion•2020•Cited by: 1

Prescribing the Diaphragm explains the cultural understandings of contraception on the eve of the FDA approval of the birth control pill. Using fictional depictions of unmarried women seeking diaphragms and a debate about whether diaphragms should be available in public hospitals, it explains how society understood contraception in the late 1950s. Taken together, they show how different public debates framed the disciplinary technology of the dia…

  • Commemorating the “Disappeared”

    Mehta Mehta•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2014•References: 2

This essay examines the “dangerous” role of women’s theater, as highlighted in La Beaute de l’icone , Fatima Bourega-Gallaire’s play on the Algerian civil war of the 1990s. The play exposes the violence of the “black decade” and highlights the gendered aggressions that have scarred Algeria’s postcolonial imaginary in a radicalized economy of fear, terror, and censorship. La Beaute de l’icone is an intense enactment of another chapter in the histo…

    Mehta Mehta•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2010

Faiza Guene's Kiffe kiffe demain describes the coming-of-age experiences of Doria, a second-generation Franco-Maghrebi, or beur, adolescent of Moroccan origin, who lives in an economically and socially disfavored Parisian housing project. Doria's abandonment by her father, who abruptly leaves for Morocco to marry a younger woman capable of giving him a male heir, provides the novel's focus: a simultaneous critique of Maghrebi, or North African, p…
