Urban Administrative Restructuring and Gender Gap in the Labor Market: Evidence From China's City‐County Merger Reform
As a major form of urban administrative restructuring in China, city‐county mergers dismantle boundaries between municipal districts and surrounding counties, creating more integrated local labor markets. Using longitudinal data from the China Household Finance Survey and a difference‐in‐differences framework, we examine how this restructuring affects gender disparities in labor market outcomes. We find that the reform significantly widens the ge…
Shaping gender inequality in urban geometric divergence: Evidence from China
This study investigates how the layout of urban spaces affects the gender pay gap in China and the underlying mechanisms. Using detailed residential address information, our findings suggest that the non-compact urban geometry widens the gender pay gap. We find that irregular urban form increases commuting costs, weakens transport connectivity, and slows the growth of female-intensive industries, jointly amplifying gender disparities, thereby con…

Communication currency: Chinese ceremony media as emotion extension and a symbol of identification
This paper focuses on the traditional ‘li(Rites)’ and ‘yi(etiquette)’ in China, and takes the Yao people’s most important ceremony—’Tiao Panwang’ and its participants in Heng village as the research object. Through participatory observation and in-depth interviews, based on the origin of the rake and comb ceremony, this paper explores the value change and social influence of the ceremony as a medium in social communication. Good intentions gone awry: Rail lines and inner‐city development
This study explored the impact of transportation systems in urban areas on economic activity. We examined the effect of traditional Chinese railway construction fencing on urban spatial development using nighttime luminance and railway data from prefecture‐level cities. The study found that the fencing effect exacerbated uneven development on either side of the railway, especially in economically underdeveloped areas. These results were supported…
Reshaping urban horizons: Unraveling urban spatial expansion through development zone site selection
Urban spatial structures significantly influence the quality of production, living, and ecological spaces within cities. Development zones serve as essential spatial carriers in China's rapid industrialization and urbanization, facilitating horizontal urban expansion. This study examines the impact of development zone site selection on urban space expansion through both theoretical analysis and empirical evidence. Results reveal that the dispersi…

Does compact city shape matter to residents' happiness
Agglomeration and innovation: Evidence from skyscraper development in China
The effects of skyscraper development on surrounding firms' innovation in China is assessed in this paper, and empirical results show that skyscraper development significantly promotes the innovation of firms within 1 km of skyscrapers. However, such effect only exists around very tall skyscrapers in large cities. This means that skyscraper development in small cities often is unfit for the economic fundamentals of these cities, which may weaken …
