  • Kukuruz “cocoon”

    Alex Drace-Francis•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Balkanologie•2024

The author proposes a new etymology for kukuruz, in various forms the most common term for ‘maize’ in many east European and Eurasian languages. Kukuruz is presumed to be cognate with Latin cucullus, itself a term of unclear origin, meaning ‘cocoon’, ‘wrapped object’. Semantic and formal parallels with Romanian păpuşoi are also noted

  • Ion Luca Caragiale on Intellectuals and Identity (1899, 1909)

    Alex Drace-Francis, Alex Drace‐Francis•ARTICLE•Journal of Romanian Studies•2022

Ion Luca Caragiale (1852–1912) is best known as the leading Romanian dramatist from the nation-building period at the end of the nineteenth century. Caragiale also wrote satirical sketches on social issues of his day, capturing the appearance of new social types and issues of identity and alterity. The following two sketches, published in the Bucharest newspaper Universul in 1899 and 1909 respectively, not only offer entertaining snapshots of cul…

  • Peasant Violence and Antisemitism in Early Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe, by Irina Marin

    Open Access•Alex Drace-Francis, Alex Drace‐Francis•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2021

At the beginning of 1907, Romania appeared to be one of the more politically stable countries in Europe, having enjoyed nearly thirty years of independence under the same monarch, Charles I; an apparently functional parliamentary system; and gradual increases in urbanisation, infrastructure and literacy. By the spring of the same year, a series of rural revolts spread from Moldavia in the north of the country to Wallachia in the south-west. These…

  • Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe

Joep Leerssen, Inge Adriansen et al.•BOOK•Encyclopedia of Romantic…•2018

This encyclopedia documents the presence and impact of nationalized cultural consciousness in European nationalism. It tracks how intellectuals, historians, philologists, novelists, poets, painters, folklorists, and composers, in an intensely collaborative transnational network, articulated the national identities and aspirations that would go on to determine European history and politics, with effects that are still felt today. Edited by Joep Le…

  • Mirna Zeman. Reise zu den “Illyriern”

    Alex Drace-Francis, Alex Drace‐Francis•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2014

Historians' interest in travel and geographical literature as a source of stereotypes has increased in recent years, partly as a result of the ongoing influence of Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) and other studies positing the significant influence of such works on worldviews and territorial identities. There are now many studies that treat larger geopolitical units as “mental maps”: scholars have moved beyond “the Orient” to interrogate notions…
