    Open Access•Thomas W Teasdale, David R Owen et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1988

S ummary . Intelligence test scores and educational levels of a representative sample of 71,768 draftees are reported for seven geographical regions in Denmark. Differences between the regions were found for both variables. These latter appear to be related to regional urban…

  • The Influence of Paternal Social Class on Intelligence and Educational Level in Male Adoptees and Non-adoptees

    Open Access•Thomas W Teasdale, David R Owens et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1986•Cited by: 2

Intelligence test scores and educational level of 241 18-26 year-old male adoptees correlate with the social class of both their biological fathers (r = 0.218, P < 0.01; and r = 0.173, P < 0.05) and their adoptive fathers (r = 0.216, P < 0.01; and r = 0.359, P < 0.001). The correlation between the biological father's social class and the adoptee's educational level may be largely mediated by the inheritance of characteristics more directly measur…

  • Social class and mobility in male adoptees and non-adoptees

    Open Access•Thomas W Teasdale, David R Owen•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1984

Four hundred and fourteen adoptees were located in a population of 28,879 males born within a 4-year period. For all of these males, two social class ratings were obtained, based upon their occupations at age 25–28 and 35–38. A single rating was obtained for their fathers, based upon occupation at the time of birth of the population males. In the case of adoptees, this rating was obtained for both the biological and the adoptive fathers. The adop…

  • Mood Alteration with Swimming—Swimmers Really Do “Feel Better”

    Bonnie G Berger, David R Owen•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1983

This study illustrated the relationship between swimming, an aerobic activity, and mood. One hundred college students, voluntarily enrolled in beginning or intermediate swimming classes or in lecture-control classes, completed the POMS before and after class. Results of a 5-way ANOVA confirmed that, as predicted, swimmers reported significantly less tension, depression, anger, confusion, and more vigor after exercising than before. Both novice an…

  • The 47,XYY male

    David R Owen•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1972

Reviews previous reports relating psychological and physical variables to males with a 47,XYY chromosome complement. No clear relationship of external genitalia, bone and joint abnormalities, dental irregularities, skin disorders, and some hormone levels with an XYY constitution has been established. Increased stature, dermatoglyphic alterations, possible neurological involvement, alterations in testicular cells, and some slight cardiac anomaly m…

  • Blood Type Gene Frequency and Mental Ability

    Open Access•David R Owen•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1972

2 attempts to replicate suspected relationships among blood groups and mental ability using multiple regression failed. The problem of statistical inference in stepwise multiple regression is discussed and illustrated with a Monte Carlo example
