  • Can triad forestry reconcile Europe’s biodiversity and forestry strategies? A critical evaluation of forest zoning

    Open Access•Thomas A Nagel, Mariano Rodríguez-Recio et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 39

Balancing increasing demand for wood products while also maintaining forest biodiversity is a paramount challenge. Europe’s Biodiversity and Forest Strategies for 2030 attempt to address this challenge. Together, they call for strict protection of 10% of land area, including all primary and old growth forests, increasing use of ecological forestry, and less reliance on monocultural plantations. Using data on country wide silvicultural practices a…

  • Drivers of European landscape change

    T van der Sluis, Bas Arts et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 42

Understanding complex processes of landscape change is crucial to guide the development of future landscapes and land resources. Through Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping, we studied the processes of landscape change of six different environmental zones in Europe. Results show that landscapes are complex systems, with many interactions. Except for one, all regions show a strong decline in landscape quality. Dominant drivers are EU policy and the global eco…

  • The Role of Farm Management Characteristics in Understanding the Spatial Distribution of Landscape Elements

    Open Access•Leon T Hauser, T van der Sluis et al.•ARTICLE•Rural Landscapes Society…•2016•References: 63

In Western Europe the fate of biodiversity is intimately linked to agricultural land use. A driving force behind biodiversity decline is the gradual conversion of Europe’s traditional integrated rural landscapes of nature and agriculture into monofunctional units of production. With these developments, semi-natural landscape elements have increasingly disappeared from agricultural landscapes. A growing body of research, however, underlines the im…
