Mapping friendship: The foundations and origins of social network cognition
Police Officers’ Reflections on Using Alternative and Augmentative Communication During Investigative Interviewing of People with Speech, Language and Communication Needs
People with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) frequently experience barriers in their meetings with the legal system, and equal access to justice is not yet a reality for them. One area for improvement seems to be police officers’ competence about SLCN and how to provide support for people with SLCN during investigative interviewing. In this study, eight Norwegian police officers participated in focus-group interviews to share thei…
Importance of Land, family and culture for a good life: Remote Aboriginal people with disability and carers
Worldwide health and social outcomes of Indigenous people are poorer than those of non‐Indigenous. In Australia, the Indigenous population experience disability at more than twice the rate of the non‐Indigenous population, and a quarter live in geographically remote areas. The challenges associated with accessing services and supports in remote communities can impact on a good life for Aboriginal people with disability. Interviews were conducted …
Indigenous persons with disability in remote Australia: Research methodology and Indigenous community control
Decolonisation aims to deconstruct the hegemonic traditional Western academic practices and values that oppress Indigenous peoples. Decolonising research methodologies is a relatively new practice in disability research in colonised nations. This paper details the Indigenous community-controlled research methodology that underpinned a disability research project with the Anangu and Yarnangu of Central Australia, ‘Walykumunu Nyinaratjaku: To Live …
Describing Ovarian Cycles, Pregnancy Characteristics, and the Use of Contraception in Female White‐Faced Marmosets, Callithrix geoffroyi
Endocrine data and characteristics of nonconceptive ovarian cycling and pregnancy are limited within the genus Callithrix to the common marmoset ( C. jacchus ) and Wied's black tufted‐ear marmoset ( C. kuhlii ). This article presents patterns of urinary pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG) excretion, as determined by enzyme immunoassay, throughout the course of ovarian cycling and pregnancy in white‐faced marmosets ( C. geoffroyi ). Furthermore, char…
Demographic review of a captive colony of callitrichids ( Callithrix kuhlii )
Although reports on colony demographics for a variety of callitrichid species are available in the literature, to date there has not been a detailed examination of Wied's black tufted‐ear marmoset ( Callithrix kuhlii ). The purpose of this study is to present colony demographics for C. kuhlii from the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Callitrichid Research Center from 1991 to 2002. C. kuhlii are currently held in a number of zoological parks in t…
Treatment with CRH‐1 antagonist antalarmin reduces behavioral and endocrine responses to social stressors in marmosets ( Callithrix kuhlii )
Corticotropin‐releasing hormone (CRH) has multiple roles in coordinating the behavioral and endocrine responses to a host of environmental challenges, including social stressors. In the present study we evaluated the role of CRH in mediating responses to a moderate social stressor in Wied's black tufted‐eared marmosets ( Callithrix kuhlii ). Male and female marmosets (n=14) were administered antalarmin (a selective CRH‐1 receptor antagonist; 50μg…
Serotonin function is associated with behavioral response to a novel conspecific in marmosets
The function of the central nervous system neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) contributes to individual differences in impulsive behavior in humans and nonhuman primates. We investigated the relationship between 5-HT function and behavioral responses to a novel social scenario in marmosets. In the first study, marmosets (n=10) were treated orally with fluoxetine HCl (FLX) or vehicle for two trial periods and exposed to a novel conspecific for a 20…
Nighttime Wakefulness Associated with Infant Rearing in Callithrix kuhlii
What it means to get off sit‐down money: Community development employment projects (CDEP)
Aboriginal people in Australian society today are significantly disadvantaged in many aspects of their lives, in particular, in the area of employment. This paper describes occupation in traditional Aboriginal society and the changes that have occurred as a result of the European settlement. These changes have had a significant impact on present day attitudes to paid employment. The Community Development Employment Scheme (CDEP) or “work for the …
