Parantropología, ¿indisciplina o subdisciplina emergente: Debates Sobre Las Fronteras Del Conocimiento Antropológico
This article critically examines paranthropology, arguing that its main value lies not in the consolidation of a new subdiscipline but in its role as an indiscipline that exposes the political and historical boundaries of anthropological knowledge. Research on the paranormal serves as a case study to explore the tense and often silenced relationship that anthropology has maintained with anomalous experiences. Methodologically, the article develop…

Spiritual Elasticity and Crisis: From Non-Religiosity to Transreligiosity-An Introduction
From the socio-economic and political crisis in southern Europe during the last few decades, to the more recent global healthcare crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic, contemporary societies have faced and are still under the impact of considerable sociocultural change
We have always been transreligious: An introduction to transreligiosity
This article is a proposition and exploration of the term ‘transreligiosity’. We argue that transreligiosity is more apt to describe the transgressive character of religiosity, focusing more particularly on the transversality of spaces, symbolic or otherwise, which are created in religious phenomena. We examine the porosity of religious boundaries and, ultimately, propose the term transreligiosity to embrace them, placing emphasis on their transr…
Possessed by a slave, not slavery
The present paper is divided into three large steps around the themes of spirit possession and the historical imagination of slavery in Cuba. These three steps reflect both ethnographic dimensions of these themes and broader theoretical approaches towards them. The last step, 'apomimesis', is the one proposed by the author, not by way of replacement but displacement. The first step, 'formulaic' historical imagination, covers the ground of a direc…
Pentecostal exorcism and Afro-Cuban endorcism: Radical participation' and the proliferation of symmetries
In this article, we discuss personal moments of our respective ethnographic research on Guatemalan Pentecostalism and Afro-Cuban religiosity. Through our own involvement, we expose the approaches of the two religious forms, the former working by way of exorcism and the latter by way of endorcism. Guatemalan Pentecostal exorcism works by a radical expulsion of the previous non-Pentecostal past to strictly convert the person. Afro-Cuban endorcism, …
Afro-Cuban Counterpoint: Religious and Political Encompassments
Food-for-words: Sacrificial counterpoint and oracular articulacy in Cuba
By critically engaging with anthropological theories on sacrifice and religious "mediation," this article offers a doubly indigenous ethnographic theory of sacrifice and much beyond. Using material on Afro-Cuban divination and Fernando Ortiz's notion of "counterpoint," it goes beyond dominant scholarly understandings of sacrifice as a dialectical mediation between the "sacred" and the "profane," and an act of substitution and annihilation. Rather…
When Biographies Cross Necrographies: The Exchange of 'Affinity' in Cuba
In Cuba one might encounter a lively exchange occurring between the living and the dead (los muertos), one which is often described in terms of 'affinity'. This involves a reciprocity among the biographies of the former, the past (biographies) and present condition ('necrography') of the latter, who are not in the least limited to ancestors or previously intimate to the living persons. The intensification of such exchange takes place within a dyn…

Human substances and ontological transformations in the African-inspired ritual complex of Palo Monte in Cuba
This article brings together three distinct, yet articulating, ethnographic perspectives on the effects and affordances of material things, in particular human substances, in the Afro-Cuban religious practice of Palo Monte, a complex of Bantu-Congo inspired traditions. The authors argue that Palo Monte engenders ontological forms that are irreducible to either 'matter' or 'spirit' and thing or idea, but instead predicate their agency on a hybridi…
